NASHVILLE – Dolly Parton, the force of nature who became Tennessee’s greatest cultural icon and one of the world’s most beloved artists, celebrated her 80th birthday yesterday, January 19. The milestone was marked by global tributes, a major new musical release, and the official proclamation of “Dolly Parton Day” in her home state.

“I Feel Like I’m Just Getting Started”

At 80, Dolly continues to defy expectations about aging. In a recent interview, she joked about her iconic look: “People say, ‘Well, you’re going to be 80 years old.’ Well, so what? Look at all I’ve done in 80 years. I feel like I’m just getting started!” She emphasized that as long as her health holds, she has no plans to slow down.

To mark the occasion, Parton released a powerful new version of her 1977 classic, “Light of a Clear Blue Morning.” The reimagined track features an all-star lineup, including her goddaughter Miley Cyrus, along with Lainey Wilson, Queen Latifah, and Reba McEntire. The song carries a message of hope and resilience, with proceeds benefiting pediatric cancer research at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.

Resilience Amidst Health Challenges

The past year has been a period of both triumph and personal difficulty for the singer. In March 2025, Dolly mourned the loss of her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean. Following a series of “health challenges” and minor procedures that led to the postponement of her Las Vegas residency until September 2026, fans had expressed concern for her well-being.

Dolly addressed these rumors head-on in a social media video: “I wanted you to know that I am not dying! I’m not ready to die yet. I don’t think God is through with me and I ain’t done working.” Although she missed the “Opry Goes Dolly” celebration in person on doctor’s orders to “take it easy,” she remained the life of the party through video messages and new celebratory photos—including one where she humorously uses a fire extinguisher on her massive butterfly-shaped birthday cake.

A Legacy Far Beyond Music

Beyond her 11 Grammy Awards and hits like “Jolene” and “9 to 5,” Dolly’s 80th birthday celebrates her unprecedented humanitarian impact. From funding COVID-19 vaccines to her Imagination Library, which has now gifted over 300 million books to children worldwide, Parton remains a rare figure of unity in a polarized world.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee officially designated January 19, 2026, as Dolly Parton Day, stating that her “generosity, humility, and dedication to improving the lives of others exemplify the values of the Volunteer State.” Even international stars joined the fray, with Bono and U2 surprising the “Queen of Country” by sending a bagpipe player to perform “Happy Birthday” for her.

As Dolly enters her ninth decade, she remains the living proof that a heart of gold and a “can-do” spirit—wrapped in sequins and a smile—can truly change the world.
