Prince Harry has publicly responded to recent comments by former United States President Donald Trump that questioned the role of NATO allies in the war in Afghanistan, reflecting on the deep sacrifices made by coalition forces and the personal impact of his own military service.

In a statement released Friday, the Duke of Sussex, who served on two frontline tours in Afghanistan with the British Army, underscored that the invocation of NATO’s mutual-defence clause after the September 11, 2001, attacks obligated all allied nations to stand united in pursuit of shared security goals. Harry emphasised that he “served there,” formed lifelong bonds with fellow soldiers, and lost friends in the conflict, adding that the United Kingdom alone suffered 457 military fatalities. He noted that “thousands of lives were changed forever” and that families were left to cope with profound loss, insisting these sacrifices “deserve to be spoken about truthfully and with respect” as nations remain committed to diplomacy and peace.

The remarks from Prince Harry came after Trump suggested in a recent television interview that NATO members “stayed a little back, a little off the front lines” in Afghanistan and cast doubt on whether the alliance would come to the United States’ defence if needed. Those comments have provoked criticism from across Britain’s political spectrum, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer earlier condemning the remarks as “insulting and frankly appalling” and calling for recognition of allied contributions.

Harry’s statement, while not naming Trump directly, clearly served as a rebuttal to the suggestion that allied forces did not fully participate in the Afghanistan campaign. Drawing on his personal experience of combat, he highlighted the shared commitment of NATO partners and urged that the historical record reflect the reality of the coalition’s role in the long conflict.

Veterans and political figures in the United Kingdom have echoed similar sentiments, emphasising the bravery and sacrifice of troops who served alongside their American counterparts. In the face of controversial remarks questioning the alliance’s cohesion, British leaders and military veterans have sought to reaffirm the mutual respect and collective effort that characterised the Afghanistan mission.

Prince Harry’s intervention signals a rare and pointed public engagement on foreign policy by a senior member of the British royal family, rooted in his firsthand experience of war and the lasting human cost borne by soldiers and their families.
