TUMBLER RIDGE, B.C. — The small, close-knit community of Tumbler Ridge has been shattered by a horrific mass shooting that left 10 people dead, including a female suspect, marking the deadliest incident of its kind in British Columbia’s history.

The violence erupted on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby residence, prompting a massive law enforcement response and a province-wide wave of mourning.

A Community Under Siege

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) received reports of an active shooter at the secondary school at approximately 1:20 p.m. local time. Officers arriving on the scene discovered a gruesome sight, with six victims found dead inside the building.

An emergency alert sent to residents’ cellphones described the suspect as a “female in a dress with brown hair.” Hours later, Superintendent Ken Floyd confirmed that the individual believed to be the shooter was found deceased inside the school from what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury.

Multiple Crime Scenes

As the investigation unfolded, authorities identified a second location, a residence in the community, where two more victims were found dead. A ninth victim succumbed to their injuries while being transported to the hospital, bringing the total death toll, including the perpetrator, to ten.

In addition to the fatalities, at least 25 people were treated at the local medical center for various injuries, with two individuals airlifted to a larger hospital in critical condition.

National Outcry

Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his “profound devastation” over the attack, cancelling a planned trip to the Munich Security Conference to coordinate the federal response. “My prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones to these horrific acts of violence,” Carney stated in a late-night address.

British Columbia Premier David Eby called the event an “unimaginable tragedy” for the town of 2,400 people. “We are all hugging our kids a little tighter tonight,” he said.

Unanswered Questions

While the RCMP believes they have identified the shooter, they have withheld her identity and age, citing the need to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation. The motive behind the shooting—the deadliest at a Canadian school since the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre, remains unknown.

Tumbler Ridge’s elementary and secondary schools will remain closed for the rest of the week as the community begins the long process of grieving and seeking answers.
