TREETING LABELS OUTBREAK “UNPRECEDENTED”; 15 CASES LINKED TO CANTERBURY NIGHTCLUB

By OPEN CHRONICLE STAFF with Agencies

CANTERBURY — Health Secretary Wes Streeting addressed the House of Commons Tuesday morning, describing the spike in Meningitis B cases across East Kent as “unprecedented” while insisting the outbreak remains “containable.” The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has now confirmed 15 cases linked to the cluster, including two deaths that have sent shockwaves through the local community.

The source of the outbreak has been traced to Club Chemistry, a nightclub in Canterbury, during the weekend of March 5–7. Officials believe the bacteria spread through close contact among attendees, including “kissing, sharing vapes, or sharing drinks.”

Confirmed Cases and School Impact

While Kent County Council has kept mainstream schools open, the local educational landscape is under severe strain. Below is the verified status of affected institutions as of 9:30 AM:

Institution Status Impact
Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar (Faversham) Confirmed Death of a Year 13 student; community support is active.
University of Kent (Canterbury) Confirmed One student death; cluster of cases; all in-person exams postponed.
Norton Knatchbull School (Ashford) Confirmed One Year 13 case; school remains open for “business as usual.”
Highworth Grammar School (Ashford) Suspected One Year 13 pupil hospitalized; increased hygiene measures.
Simon Langton Grammar for Boys Confirmed Identified as affected with direct links to the cluster.
Nore Academy & Estuary Academy Island Precautionary Both specialist schools closed as a safety measure.

Schools Reporting No Confirmed Cases

Despite early rumors, several institutions have moved to clarify that they have no confirmed infections:

  • Dane Court Grammar (Broadstairs): Retracted an earlier report; a student remains under investigation but is not a confirmed case.

  • EKC Group (Ashford/Canterbury): Zero confirmed cases across all campuses.

  • Canterbury Academy: No confirmed cases, though many students are seeking antibiotics as a precaution after visiting the nightclub.

The Emergency Response

In a swift escalation, the government has authorized an 11,000-dose antibiotic distribution campaign. Four emergency hubs have been established for those who visited Club Chemistry or were in close contact with cases.

Additionally, a targeted vaccination initiative has been launched specifically for students residing in the University of Kent halls of residence to prevent further spread within high-density living quarters.

“The risk to the wider population remains low,” Streeting noted, “but the nature of this disease requires immediate action for those directly exposed.” The UKHSA will continue to provide daily data updates at 9:30 AM.
