KYIV — In a stunning revelation that has sent shockwaves through the European security architecture, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky disclosed Wednesday that the United States has issued a stark ultimatum: Ukraine must prepare to “leave” the Donbas region or risk a total withdrawal of American security guarantees. The disclosure, reported by Novinite, points to a fundamental and potentially terminal shift in the Trump administration’s approach to the two-year-old conflict.
The “Donbas-for-Security” trade-off appears to be the cornerstone of a new White House strategy to force a frozen conflict, prioritizing the de-escalation of the Russia-Ukraine front as the U.S. military refocuses its “magazine depth” on the intensifying war with Iran.
The “Hard Realism” of Washington
According to Zelensky, U.S. officials have communicated that the current level of military and financial aid is “not sustainable” in a multi-theater global environment. The ultimatum suggests that if Kyiv does not agree to a negotiated settlement that includes territorial concessions in the East, the U.S. will cease its supply of high-end munitions, including the Patriot interceptors and ATACMS missiles, that currently protect Ukrainian cities.
“We are being told that the ‘Price of Peace’ is our land,” Zelensky said in a televised address. “But we are also being told that the ‘Price of War’ without America is our existence.”
The “Security Guarantee” Carrot
The White House’s proposal isn’t purely a threat. In exchange for ceding the Donbas, the U.S. has reportedly offered a “Steel-Clad” bilateral security treaty. This would include:
-
A “Tripwire” Force: The deployment of a small number of U.S. and European “monitoring troops” along the new border.
-
Long-Term Financing: A multi-billion-dollar reconstruction fund, potentially partially funded by seized Russian assets.
-
Modernized Defense: Continuous access to advanced U.S. military technology to ensure Ukraine remains a “porcupine” that Russia cannot swallow again.
Internal Turmoil in Kyiv
The revelation has sparked a firestorm in the Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine’s parliament). While some pragmatic voices argue that saving the 80% of Ukraine that remains free is a victory, hardliners and military commanders have labeled the proposal a “betrayal.”
The commander of Ukraine’s Ground Forces reportedly told Zelensky that “retreating from the Donbas now would render the sacrifices of the last 24 months meaningless and embolden the Kremlin to strike again in five years.”
The Shadow of “Operation Epic Fury.”
Military analysts point out that the U.S. pressure is directly linked to the “Missile Drought” currently facing the Pentagon. With the U.S. Navy and Army expending thousands of interceptors and precision missiles in the Persian Gulf, the administration is desperate to close the Ukrainian “expenditure tap.”
“The U.S. simply does not have the industrial capacity to fight a high-intensity proxy war in Europe while fighting a direct war in the Middle East,” said a fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI). “Zelensky is being sacrificed at the altar of American logistical reality.”
What’s Next?
As of Thursday morning, the Kremlin has remained uncharacteristically quiet, likely waiting to see if the internal pressure in Kyiv forces Zelensky to the negotiating table. For the Biden-era “As Long As It Takes” coalition, the “Donbas Ultimatum” marks the definitive end of an era. The question now is whether Europe can, or will, step in to fill the massive vacuum left by a retreating Washington.
