LONDON — Arsenal’s grip on the Premier League trophy loosened significantly on Saturday as a resilient Bournemouth side claimed a 2-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium, handing Manchester City a major opening in the title race.
Midfielder Alex Scott provided the decisive blow in the 74th minute, slotting home a cool finish after a precise Cherries build-up. The result leaves Arsenal at the top of the table with 70 points from 32 games, but Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City—currently on 61 points from 30 games—can close the gap to just three points if they win their two games in hand, including Sunday’s clash against Chelsea.

A Historic Milestone for Kroupi
Bournemouth dominated the opening exchanges and took a deserved lead in the 17th minute. Eli Junior Kroupi pounced on a deflected cross at the far post to silence the home crowd.
With that strike, the 19-year-old Kroupi reached 10 Premier League goals for the season. He is the first teenager to hit double figures in a debut campaign since Robbie Keane accomplished the feat for Coventry City in 1999-2000.
Arsenal’s Month of Misery
The Gunners struggled for rhythm throughout the match, appearing sluggish after nearly a month away from league action. That hiatus has been a period of heartbreak for Mikel Arteta’s squad, featuring:
-
A League Cup Final defeat to Manchester City.
-
A shock FA Cup Quarter-final exit at the hands of Championship side Southampton.
Arsenal were handed a lifeline in the 35th minute when Ryan Christie was penalized for a handball in the area. Viktor Gyökeres stepped up to convert the penalty, marking his 13th goal of the season across all competitions for the Gunners. However, the equalizer failed to spark a sustained resurgence.
The Run-In
The defeat is Arsenal’s first in nine league matches, but it comes at the worst possible time. With Manchester City set to host Arsenal next weekend at the Etihad Stadium, the momentum has swung violently toward the defending champions.
Bournemouth, meanwhile, moved into 9th place with 45 points, firmly placing themselves in the hunt for a European qualification spot.
“We huffed and puffed but lacked the final spark,” said a frustrated Mikel Arteta post-match. “We have to react immediately. The title is still in our hands, but the margin for error has disappeared.”
