Tensions between Washington and Tehran have deepened after Iran ruled out participation in a new round of negotiations with the United States, even as Donald Trump signaled that a high-level delegation would travel to Pakistan for renewed diplomacy.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Monday that Tehran has “no plans” to attend talks in Islamabad, citing a breakdown in trust following recent U.S. actions. He accused Washington of undermining the fragile ceasefire and questioned its commitment to diplomacy.

According to Baghaei, what he described as contradictory behavior, including continued military pressure and enforcement of a naval blockade, has made further negotiations increasingly difficult.

Naval incident raises stakes

The diplomatic rift comes amid heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, where a U.S. naval vessel fired on an Iranian-flagged commercial ship that attempted to bypass the blockade. The incident marked the first confrontation of its kind since the blockade began and risks further escalation.

Tehran views the episode as a potential violation of the two-week ceasefire agreement, reinforcing its reluctance to re-engage in talks under current conditions.

Washington presses ahead

Despite Iran’s refusal, Donald Trump confirmed that a U.S. delegation would head to Islamabad. The team is expected to include JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and presidential adviser Jared Kushner.

The White House has not clarified whether the proposed talks would involve direct engagement with Iranian officials or indirect mediation through Pakistani channels.

Pakistan on alert

Authorities in Pakistan have not officially confirmed that a second round of talks will take place. However, preparations in the capital suggest anticipation of high-level diplomatic activity.

Reports indicate that Islamabad has been placed under heightened security, with plans to deploy thousands of additional personnel and restrict movement in key areas of the city. Such measures mirror those taken during the previous round of talks earlier this month.

Uncertain path forward

The latest developments highlight the fragility of diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the broader conflict. With the ceasefire under strain and mutual accusations mounting, the prospects for meaningful negotiations remain uncertain.

For now, Washington appears determined to keep diplomatic channels open, while Tehran signals that conditions must change before it returns to the table.
