A senior Israeli intelligence official has revealed new details about a covert operative whose work played a significant role in Israel’s recent campaign against Iran, shedding light on a figure whose identity remains largely concealed.
Speaking at a memorial ceremony, David Barnea, head of Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad, paid tribute to an agent known only as “Mem,” who died in 2023 in a boating accident in Italy.
According to Barnea, the agent-led operations that “significantly influenced” Israel’s success during the latest confrontation with Iran were particularly through a combination of technological innovation and covert strategy.
A covert life, a hidden legacy
“Mem,” whose real identity has not been officially disclosed, was among four people who died when a boat capsized on Lake Maggiore in May 2023. At the time, Italian media identified him under an alias, though Israeli authorities have kept his true identity classified.
Barnea described the operative as a central figure in what he referred to as Operation Roaring Lion, highlighting his creativity, precision, and leadership in complex intelligence missions.
“You worked in secret throughout your adult life,” Barnea said in remarks recalling the agent’s contributions. “Even after your death, much of what you achieved cannot be publicly revealed.”
The incident on Lake Maggiore
The incident occurred during what reports described as a working meeting involving intelligence personnel. Of the 23 people aboard the vessel, the majority were believed to be current or former Israeli and Italian agents.
The boat, which exceeded its legal passenger capacity, capsized just 100 meters from shore. Survivors were rescued by nearby boats or managed to swim to safety.
Italian authorities later confirmed that two of the victims were affiliated with Italy’s security services. The vessel’s captain, Claudio Carminati, was sentenced to four years in prison after reaching a plea agreement related to the incident.
Quiet influence in a broader conflict
Barnea’s remarks offer a rare glimpse into the shadowy world of intelligence operations tied to the broader confrontation between Israel and Iran. While details remain limited, the acknowledgment underscores the role of covert activities in shaping the outcome of modern conflicts.
The agent’s body was returned to Israel and buried in a military cemetery in Ashkelon, with senior intelligence officials in attendance.
A symbol of unseen operations
The story of “Mem” reflects the often-unseen dimension of international security, where operations are carried out far from public view, and recognition comes only in limited form.
As tensions in the region continue to evolve, the legacy of figures like “Mem” highlights the influence of intelligence work that, while largely hidden, can have far-reaching consequences on the global stage.
