Apple is reportedly preparing one of the most radical redesigns in the history of the iPhone, with early supply chain leaks pointing to a flagship device expected in 2027 that could fundamentally reshape the look and feel of its iconic smartphone.

At the center of the redesign is a new quad-curved OLED display, manufactured by Samsung Display, which would wrap seamlessly around all four edges of the device. Unlike earlier curved screens that only extended along the sides, this “equal-depth quad-curved” design is said to create a continuous surface, effectively eliminating visible bezels and producing a fully immersive front face.

The concept of curved displays is not entirely new. Devices such as the Huawei P40 Pro experimented with similar designs in the past. However, the industry has largely shifted toward flat screens in recent years, a trend strongly influenced by Apple itself with the introduction of flat-edged designs beginning with the iPhone 12.

What sets Apple’s approach apart is the combination of this design with advanced display technology. The new panel is expected to use COE, or Colour Filter on Encapsulation, a method that removes the traditional polariser layer. This allows for a thinner display stack, improved brightness, and greater energy efficiency, all critical factors for next-generation mobile devices.

Beyond the display, Apple appears to be tackling one of its most persistent engineering challenges, fully integrating Face ID sensors and the front-facing camera beneath the screen. Achieving this would remove the need for notches or cutouts, completing the vision of a truly uninterrupted display. While under-display camera technology has appeared in some competing devices, combining it with advanced facial recognition systems remains technically complex.

The device, which could be released to coincide with a milestone anniversary, may carry the name iPhone 20 or potentially iPhone XX, depending on Apple’s branding direction. Either way, it is shaping up to be a symbolic and technological leap forward for the company.

If these reports prove accurate, the 2027 iPhone would represent more than just an incremental upgrade. It would signal a return to bold hardware experimentation, redefining user experience through design, materials, and display innovation.

For Apple, a company known for setting industry trends rather than following them, the challenge will be not only to deliver on these ambitious concepts but to do so with the reliability and polish that consumers expect. If successful, the device could once again shift the direction of the global smartphone market.
