Federal agents raided the office and cannabis business of a senior Democratic legislator in Virginia on Wednesday, intensifying scrutiny around one of the state’s most influential political figures amid reports of an ongoing corruption investigation.
According to multiple US media outlets and eyewitness accounts, FBI agents executed court-authorized search warrants at properties linked to Virginia Senate President pro tempore Louise Lucas in the city of Portsmouth. Heavily armed tactical teams were seen entering both Lucas’s legislative office and a nearby cannabis dispensary she reportedly co-owns.
Footage from the scene showed agents removing boxes and restricting access to the buildings while staff members were ordered outside. Several individuals at the dispensary were reportedly taken into custody for questioning, though no charges have been publicly announced.

In a statement cited by US outlets, the Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed that agents were carrying out a “court-authorized federal search warrant” and said there was no threat to public safety. Officials declined to provide further details, citing an active investigation.
The raids have triggered widespread political attention in Virginia, where Lucas is one of the Democratic Party’s most prominent and controversial figures. As president pro tempore of the state senate, she holds a senior leadership position in the General Assembly and has been closely associated at various times with Governor Abigail Spanberger.
Lucas has played a major role in advancing Democratic legislation in Virginia, including measures related to voting rights, abortion protections, gun control, and redistricting. She was also one of the leading advocates behind a controversial congressional map proposal ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
The federal probe has renewed attention on Lucas’s cannabis business operations, which have faced scrutiny in recent years. Local reporting previously alleged that products sold at her dispensary contained labeling inconsistencies and levels of controlled substances exceeding legal thresholds.
In 2022, Lucas publicly accused then Attorney General Jason Miyares of targeting her cannabis business for political reasons. Miyares denied the allegations at the time.
The latest developments come during an already tense political climate in Virginia, where legal challenges over congressional redistricting continue to move through the courts. A case contesting the constitutionality of the recently approved district map remains pending before the state’s highest court.
Lucas has not issued a detailed public statement regarding the FBI operation. When approached by reporters outside the scene, she reportedly said she was waiting for authorities to explain the situation.
Federal investigators have not indicated whether the raids are connected to public corruption, campaign activities, cannabis licensing issues or other matters. No criminal charges against Lucas have been announced as of Wednesday evening.
