Fresh tensions erupted in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday after Iranian state media reported an exchange of fire between Iranian forces and US naval units operating in the strategic waterway.

According to Iranian media outlets citing a military official, Tehran launched missiles at what were described as “enemy units” following an alleged US attack on an Iranian oil tanker in the region. The official claimed the targeted vessels sustained damage and subsequently withdrew from the area.

The US Department of Defense has not confirmed the reported missile exchange. However, Pentagon officials stated that the US Navy had disabled an Iranian tanker in the strait as part of ongoing maritime operations linked to the regional security crisis.

The incident marks another dangerous escalation in the already volatile standoff involving the United States, Iran, and Israel, with global shipping routes and energy markets remaining under severe pressure.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, carrying a substantial portion of global oil exports. Any disruption to navigation through the narrow passage immediately affects international energy prices and raises fears of broader regional instability.

Military activity in the area has intensified in recent weeks following the expansion of the US-led naval presence and Iran’s repeated warnings against foreign military operations near its territorial waters.

Meanwhile, violence also continued elsewhere in the region. Lebanon’s health ministry said at least 12 people were killed in a wave of Israeli air strikes carried out on Thursday despite an existing ceasefire arrangement.

The victims reportedly included two children and a paramedic. Lebanese authorities said several additional civilians were wounded during the strikes, which targeted multiple locations in southern Lebanon.

The renewed violence comes amid growing diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing a wider regional conflict. International mediators, including officials from Pakistan and Gulf states, have continued discussions with Washington and Tehran in an attempt to stabilize the situation and reopen maritime transit routes.

Despite ongoing negotiations, the latest incidents highlight how quickly tensions in the Gulf and surrounding region can escalate into direct military confrontation.
