Russia launched a record-breaking wave of drone attacks against Ukraine over 24 hours, with Ukrainian officials reporting that at least 1,428 drones entered the country’s airspace between May 13 and May 14.
According to Ukraine’s Air Force, the massive assault included Shahed, Gerbera, and Italmas attack drones, as well as decoy unmanned aerial vehicles designed to overwhelm air defense systems.
The attacks marked one of the largest aerial bombardments since the beginning of the war.
Massive Overnight Assault
Ukrainian military authorities said 753 drones entered Ukrainian airspace between 8 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. on May 13 alone.
A further 675 drones were launched overnight into May 14.
Ukraine’s Air Force stated that 1,362 drones were either shot down or lost through electronic warfare interference.
Officials said at least 50 successful drone strikes were recorded, while debris from intercepted drones fell across 44 separate locations throughout the country.
In addition to the drones, Ukrainian forces reported intercepting 41 missiles of various types during the same period.
Despite the interceptions, 15 missiles reportedly reached their targets.
Western Ukraine Among Main Targets
The large-scale attacks focused heavily on western regions of Ukraine, areas that have often been considered relatively safer compared to the front lines in the east and south.
The bombardment prompted a diplomatic reaction from Hungary, whose Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador in protest over attacks affecting the Zakarpattia region.
Zakarpattia is home to a significant ethnic Hungarian population, making the strikes particularly sensitive for Budapest.
Hungarian officials condemned the attacks and expressed concern over the safety of civilians in the border region.
Drone Warfare Intensifies
The latest attacks highlight the growing role of drone warfare in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Both sides have increasingly relied on drones for long-range strikes, reconnaissance missions, and attacks on infrastructure.
Russia has expanded its use of Iranian-designed Shahed drones alongside domestically produced unmanned systems in an effort to pressure Ukrainian air defenses and energy infrastructure.
Ukraine, meanwhile, has strengthened electronic warfare capabilities and air defense systems supplied by Western allies to counter the growing threat.
Military analysts say the use of large numbers of decoy drones is designed to exhaust missile interceptors and create openings for more destructive strikes.
Regional Tensions Continue Rising
The escalation comes amid continuing uncertainty surrounding the broader regional security environment and growing concerns about the sustainability of air defense resources on both sides.
Western governments continue supplying military assistance to Ukraine while Russia intensifies aerial operations targeting cities, military infrastructure, and logistical routes.
The conflict has increasingly expanded beyond front-line battles into prolonged campaigns involving missiles, drones, and electronic warfare technologies.
The latest record drone barrage underscores how rapidly modern warfare is evolving as unmanned systems become central to large-scale military operations.
