Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to travel to China next week for a two-day state visit that comes just days after US President Donald Trump concluded high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

The Kremlin announced on Saturday that Putin will visit China on May 19 and 20 at Xi’s invitation, in what Moscow described as another step toward strengthening the “comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation” between the two countries.

According to the Kremlin, the talks will focus on bilateral relations, economic cooperation, global security issues, and major regional developments. The two leaders are also expected to sign a joint statement alongside several intergovernmental and interdepartmental agreements.

Putin is also scheduled to meet Chinese Premier Li Qiang to discuss trade and economic ties, particularly as both countries continue to expand financial and energy cooperation amid growing tensions with the West.

The visit carries symbolic significance as it coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Treaty of Good Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation signed between Russia and China in 2001. The two presidents are also expected to attend the opening ceremony of the Russia-China Years of Education initiative covering 2026 and 2027.

Beijing’s Foreign Ministry separately confirmed the visit, underscoring the importance of the diplomatic exchange following Trump’s closely watched trip to China earlier this week.

Trump’s meetings with Xi focused on trade, Taiwan, artificial intelligence, energy, and global conflicts, including the war in Ukraine and tensions surrounding Iran and the Strait of Hormuz. The American president described the summit as productive and announced a series of trade understandings with Beijing, including expanded Chinese purchases of American aircraft and energy products.

The timing of Putin’s visit is likely to attract significant international attention, as Washington increasingly seeks to manage competition with Beijing while simultaneously confronting Moscow over Ukraine.

Despite pressure from Western sanctions, economic ties between China and Russia have continued to deepen. Bilateral trade between the two countries surpassed $200 billion in 2025, according to official figures.

On Friday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing and Washington shared an interest in achieving an early end to the war in Ukraine and would continue to communicate on efforts to promote stability.

China has attempted to position itself as a diplomatic intermediary in several global conflicts while maintaining close political and economic relations with Moscow. Western governments, however, continue to scrutinize the growing partnership between Russia and China, particularly in areas involving energy, technology, and strategic coordination.
