Aaron Rodgers has confirmed that the 2026 NFL season will mark the final chapter of one of the most celebrated quarterback careers in league history, ending months of speculation about his future after signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“This is it,” Rodgers said Wednesday when asked whether the upcoming campaign would be his final season in professional football.
The 42-year-old quarterback, a four-time NFL Most Valuable Player and future Hall of Famer, recently agreed to a one-year deal to return to Pittsburgh after guiding the Steelers to an AFC North title last season.
Rodgers did not elaborate extensively on the reasons behind his decision, but acknowledged that retirement had strongly crossed his mind earlier this year following the departure of longtime Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin after Pittsburgh’s heavy playoff defeat against Houston in January.
The situation changed when the Steelers hired Mike McCarthy as Tomlin’s successor, reuniting Rodgers with the coach who oversaw most of his legendary career with the Green Bay Packers.
Rodgers and McCarthy spent 13 seasons together in Green Bay, winning a Super Bowl and establishing one of the NFL’s most successful quarterback-coach partnerships of the modern era.
According to Rodgers, the two remained in close contact during recent months while he considered whether to return for another season.
He even admitted he may have encouraged Steelers general manager Omar Khan to pursue McCarthy for the role.
The quarterback described his return to Pittsburgh as “surreal,” adding that the experience of reuniting with several former Packers coaches and staff members inside the Steelers organization felt like returning to an earlier stage of his career.
“Took me back to being a 22-year-old kid,” Rodgers said with a smile.
Despite his age, Rodgers remains determined to compete at the highest level one final time.
Last season, he threw 24 touchdown passes against just seven interceptions while helping Pittsburgh secure the division title. However, injuries and physical wear became increasingly visible during the latter part of the campaign, including missed time after suffering multiple fractures in his left wrist.
Still, both Rodgers and McCarthy believe the veteran quarterback remains capable of performing among the league’s elite.
McCarthy said Rodgers “can still throw it with anybody,” while the quarterback himself emphasized that his body still feels capable of enduring another NFL season.
The Steelers have also used Rodgers’ arrival to prepare for the future.
Pittsburgh selected Penn State quarterback Drew Allar in the third round of the draft and also added rookie Will Howard, moves widely viewed as part of the franchise’s long-term search for a successor following Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement in 2022.
Rodgers appears ready to embrace a mentoring role during his final season, despite jokingly referencing former Packers quarterback Brett Favre’s famous line that mentoring younger players was “not in my job description.”
In reality, Rodgers acknowledged he enjoys helping younger quarterbacks develop, particularly within McCarthy’s offensive system.
For the Steelers, Rodgers’ final season represents both a championship opportunity and a bridge toward the next era at quarterback.
The franchise spent the offseason aggressively upgrading its offense, adding wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., signing running back Rico Dowdle, and drafting promising young talent to strengthen the unit around Rodgers.
Pittsburgh also believes its veteran-led defense, anchored by Cam Heyward and TJ Watt, still gives the team a realistic chance to compete deep into the postseason.
Rodgers said the environment inside the organization played a major role in convincing him to return.
“I’m excited about these guys,” he said. “I’m excited about the team.”
As one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in NFL history prepares for his farewell season, the Steelers now hope Rodgers can deliver one final postseason run before bringing an end to a career that reshaped modern quarterback play and left a lasting mark on the league.
