A Russian drone struck a residential apartment building in eastern Romania overnight, injuring two people and raising fresh concerns about the war in Ukraine spilling into NATO territory.
The incident occurred in the city of Galați during the night of May 28–29 as Russia launched another large-scale drone attack against Ukrainian infrastructure and civilian targets near the Black Sea region.
According to Romania’s Ministry of Defense, one of the drones crossed into Romanian airspace and was tracked by military radar systems before crashing into the roof of a residential building in the southern part of the city.
“One of these drones entered Romanian airspace, was tracked by radar to the southern part of the city of Galați, and fell on the roof of a residential building, causing a fire,” the ministry said in a statement.

Authorities confirmed that the drone’s explosive payload detonated upon impact, causing significant structural damage and igniting a fire that forced the evacuation of approximately 70 residents from the apartment block. Firefighters later brought the blaze under control and prevented it from spreading to neighboring buildings.
Two residents sustained minor injuries, primarily from smoke inhalation and abrasions. Both were treated at the scene by emergency medical teams.
Romanian media reported that fighter aircraft and a military helicopter had been placed on alert as air defense systems monitored several drones approaching the country’s airspace during the night.
The strike marks a significant escalation and is believed to be the first confirmed case since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, in which a Russian drone directly hit an inhabited residential building inside Romania, a member of NATO and the European Union.
Previous incidents have involved Russian drone debris or unmanned aircraft entering Romanian territory, particularly in areas near the Danube River and the Ukrainian border. However, none had previously struck a populated residential structure.
Romania’s Foreign Ministry condemned the incident in strong terms, describing it as “a serious and irresponsible escalation on the part of the Russian Federation.”
The ministry announced that NATO allies and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte had been formally informed of the event. Romanian officials also called for accelerated deployment of additional counter-drone and air defense capabilities along the country’s eastern frontier.
“The Russian Federation continues to be an aggressor state, waging an illegal war with grave consequences for regional security and the safety of citizens,” the ministry stated.
Officials added that diplomatic measures would follow in response to what Bucharest described as a violation of Romanian sovereignty and international law.
Galați is located near Romania’s borders with both Ukraine and Moldova and lies only a short distance from the Ukrainian port city of Izmail in Odesa Oblast. Ukrainian authorities reported that Izmail and several surrounding areas were among the targets of overnight Russian drone attacks at roughly the same time as the Romanian incident.
Romanian authorities also revealed that a separate unexploded drone had been discovered earlier near a village in Maramureș County in northwestern Romania. Investigators are currently examining the device to determine its origin and whether it is connected to recent military operations in the region.
The latest incident comes amid a continuing wave of Russian strikes across Ukraine. Ukrainian officials have reported numerous attacks in recent days affecting civilian areas in Kherson, Sumy, Odesa and other regions. According to local authorities, residential neighborhoods, playgrounds, and even funeral processions have been struck during the latest wave of drone and missile attacks.
The drone strike in Galați is likely to intensify discussions within NATO regarding air defense coordination and the protection of alliance territory situated near active conflict zones. While Romanian officials have emphasized that the situation remains under control, the event underscores the growing risks posed by the proximity of the war to NATO’s eastern borders.
As investigations continue, the incident serves as another reminder that the conflict in Ukraine increasingly carries implications far beyond the battlefield itself, affecting regional security and raising concerns about potential unintended escalation involving neighboring countries.
