The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) has announced that its annual dinner, disrupted by a shooting incident in April, will be held on July 24 in Washington, D.C., marking a renewed commitment to press freedom and public discourse despite security concerns.

WHCA President Weijia Jiang informed members that the decision to reschedule the event came after extensive consultation and reflection. According to Jiang, the dinner remains an important symbol of the role of journalism and the protections guaranteed by the First Amendment.

“The White House Correspondents’ Dinner has served as a celebration of a free press and the vital role of journalism in our democracy for over a century,” Jiang said in a statement. She added that the violence that interrupted the original gathering only reinforced the association’s mission.

The original event, held on April 25, descended into chaos when a gunman attempted to force his way through a security checkpoint and exchanged gunfire with law enforcement officers. The incident triggered panic among attendees, including President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance, who were escorted from the stage by Secret Service agents while guests sought cover inside the ballroom.

Authorities identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, who has been charged with multiple offenses, including attempting to assassinate the president. Allen has pleaded not guilty to all charges through his legal representatives.

The April dinner was notable for being the first White House Correspondents’ Dinner attended by President Trump while serving in office during his current term. In the aftermath of the attack, Trump publicly advocated for the event to be rescheduled rather than canceled.

Following Tuesday’s announcement, Trump welcomed the decision on social media, describing it as “a sign of Strength and Fortitude.” He also stated that he had accepted an invitation from Jiang to address attendees at the rescheduled gathering.

According to the WHCA, the July event will be smaller in scale and will feature significantly enhanced security measures. New access procedures will be introduced, with further details to be shared directly with participants.

The association has also undertaken fundraising efforts to ensure that members who purchased tickets for the April event will not be required to pay again if they choose to attend the July gathering.

Jiang emphasized that the dinner is intended to send a broader message beyond the celebration of journalism.

“This dinner will not only be an opportunity to carry out our program,” she said. “It will be a statement that violence has no place in American life and a free press will not be intimidated into silence.”

The rescheduled event comes during a year in which the United States is commemorating the 250th anniversary of its founding, adding additional symbolic significance to a gathering centered on democratic institutions, political accountability, and freedom of expression.
