Spain produced one of its most convincing performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday, defeating Austria 3,0 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles to secure a place in the Round of 16.

The reigning European champions dominated throughout the contest, with Mikel Oyarzabal scoring twice and Pedro Porro adding his first international goal in a comprehensive victory that underlined Spain’s growing confidence in the tournament.

The result marks Spain’s first victory in a World Cup knockout match since lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010, following a tournament campaign that began with questions but has steadily gathered momentum.

Oyarzabal Leads the Way

Spain controlled possession from the opening whistle and repeatedly tested the Austrian defence through fluid passing and constant movement.

The breakthrough came in the 36th minute when Marc Cucurella delivered a precise low cross into the penalty area. Oyarzabal met the pass with a composed finish to give Spain a deserved lead before halftime.

Austria struggled to contain Spain’s attacking combinations, while young star Lamine Yamal remained a constant threat despite missing several opportunities to extend the advantage.

Spain Seals the Victory

The Spanish side returned after the break determined to put the match beyond doubt.

In the 66th minute, Pedro Porro capped an incisive attacking move by finishing confidently to make it 2,0, scoring his first goal for the national team.

Oyarzabal completed his brace in the 89th minute after another excellent assist from Cucurella. The forward calmly lifted the ball past goalkeeper Alexander Schlager, sealing a dominant 3,0 victory.

The striker’s two goals also brought his tournament tally to four.

Next Stop, the Round of 16

Spain will now travel to Arlington, Texas, where they will face the winner of the Round of 32 clash between Portugal and Croatia on Monday.

After an uncertain start to the World Cup, Luis de la Fuente’s side appears to be finding its rhythm at exactly the right moment, recording a fourth consecutive clean sheet while rediscovering the attacking fluency that made them European champions.

With a balanced blend of defensive solidity and attacking creativity, Spain now looks increasingly capable of mounting another serious challenge for football’s biggest prize.
