By Open Chronicle with Agencies

Iran’s mass funeral ceremonies for slain former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei dominated international headlines, as huge crowds gathered in Tehran and senior officials used the occasion to signal defiance toward the United States and Israel. Three of Khamenei’s sons appeared at the funeral, but his successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, remained out of sight, fueling questions about Iran’s internal power structure.

In Europe, wildfires raged across Portugal, Greece and Spain, with Greek authorities warning of toxic smoke as extreme temperatures again hit both Europe and the United States. Portugal and Greece requested or received outside support as hundreds of firefighters battled fast-moving blazes.

Diplomatically, Syria announced that French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to visit, a trip that would mark a major Western engagement with Damascus after the fall of the Assad regime. France and Britain were also reported to be moving toward measures to secure the Strait of Hormuz, despite Iranian warnings against any foreign military deployment.

In the United States, President Donald Trump marked the 250th anniversary of American independence with a campaign-style speech, praising the country while attacking communism and demanding loyalty from NATO allies ahead of the Ankara summit. NATO chief Mark Rutte now faces a fresh test in keeping Trump committed to the alliance.

Security incidents also marked the holiday weekend. In New York, eight people, including four children, were wounded in a shooting during Independence Day celebrations. A plane carrying eight people plunged into the East River before capsizing, while the US Navy suspended the search for a missing sailor in the Arabian Sea.

Elsewhere, Egypt ruled out popular normalization with Israel without a just peace and a Palestinian state. Venezuela’s earthquake death toll rose to nearly 3,000, with tens of thousands still reported missing. North Korea’s destroyer Kang Kon conducted a mass cruise missile launch, while China and Russia prepared joint naval drills.

Germany’s far-right AfD re-elected Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla as co-leaders at a party congress held amid large protests. German defence officials also opposed sharing classified intelligence with the party. In Iraq, the Counter Terrorism Service mourned an officer killed in clashes with ISIS remnants in Kirkuk, while Baghdad said thousands of arrest warrants remain pending for former regime officials.

Other developments included renewed Houthi clashes in Yemen, warnings of a worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan’s North Kordofan, a cargo vessel attack off Yemen’s Red Sea coast, unrest in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, and the approach of Super Typhoon Bavi toward Guam and nearby Pacific islands.
