Norway produced one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by defeating five-time champions Brazil 2,1 to book their place in the quarterfinals. Despite Brazil creating the better chances for much of the match, a brilliant display by goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland and a decisive late brace from Erling Haaland sent the Scandinavian side through to the last eight.

Brazil, one of the tournament favorites, was left to rue missed opportunities as its World Cup campaign came to a dramatic end.

Nyland Stands Tall as Brazil Waste Chances

The opening half featured two defining moments that shaped the contest. Norway had a goal ruled out, while Brazil failed to capitalize on a penalty opportunity, missing the chance to take control of the match.

Although the Brazilian attack consistently threatened, Nyland delivered a series of outstanding saves that frustrated Carlo Ancelotti’s side throughout the evening. The Norwegian goalkeeper repeatedly denied Brazil with confident handling and crucial interventions, emerging as the standout performer of the first half.

Endrick Comes Close

Brazil continued to push after the break and nearly found the breakthrough in the 59th minute.

Substitute Endrick, who had only moments earlier replaced Matheus Cunha, found himself one-on-one with Nyland. However, with only the goalkeeper to beat, the young forward dragged his effort wide, allowing Norway to survive another dangerous attack.

As Brazil searched for greater attacking urgency, Ancelotti introduced fresh legs throughout the second half in an attempt to unlock the Norwegian defense.

Neymar Makes His Tournament Debut

One of the night’s most anticipated moments came in the 67th minute when Neymar made his first appearance of the 2026 World Cup.

Returning after injury, the Brazilian star was welcomed enthusiastically by supporters but struggled to make a significant impact as Norway’s disciplined defensive structure continued to frustrate Brazil’s attacking players.

Haaland Delivers When It Matters Most

Much of the pre-match attention had focused on Erling Haaland’s goalscoring ability, yet for most of the evening it was Nyland who kept Norway alive.

Haaland eventually made the decisive contribution.

In the 79th minute, the Manchester City striker timed his run perfectly before beating Alisson to open the scoring and give Norway a crucial lead.

Nine minutes later, Haaland struck again. Once more, he found space inside the Brazilian penalty area and calmly finished to double Norway’s advantage, putting the Scandinavian side firmly in control with only minutes remaining.

Neymar Scores Too Late

Brazil were handed a lifeline deep into stoppage time when they were awarded a penalty.

Neymar stepped forward in the tenth minute of added time and converted from the spot, reducing the deficit to 2,1.

However, there was no time left for a comeback as the final whistle confirmed Norway’s famous victory and Brazil’s elimination from the tournament.

Norway Dream Continues

The victory sends Norway into the World Cup quarterfinals, where confidence will be soaring after eliminating one of football’s traditional giants.

For Brazil, the defeat represents another painful World Cup disappointment. Despite dominating long periods of the match and creating numerous opportunities, missed chances and Nyland’s exceptional goalkeeping ultimately proved decisive.

Norway now moves one step closer to what is already becoming the greatest World Cup campaign in the nation’s football history.
