Marc Márquez delivered a commanding performance at the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix, taking victory at Mobility Resort Motegi and reducing Jorge Martín’s championship advantage to just two points.
The Ducati Lenovo Team rider completed a perfect weekend after winning Saturday’s Sprint, then defeated his closest title rival in Sunday’s 24-lap Grand Prix. Martín finished second for Aprilia Racing, while teammate Marco Bezzecchi secured third place after resisting late pressure from Enea Bastianini.
It was a result that transformed the atmosphere surrounding the championship. With the season entering its decisive phase, Márquez demonstrated that his pursuit of another world title was gathering momentum at precisely the right moment.
Martín controls the opening laps
Jorge Martín arrived on the starting grid with pole position and the championship lead, determined to protect his advantage against an increasingly dangerous Márquez.
When the lights went out, the Aprilia rider made an excellent start and retained the lead into the opening corners. Márquez settled immediately behind him, while Bezzecchi established himself among the front-running group.
Tyre selection was an important consideration throughout the weekend. Following the degradation concerns observed during the Sprint, the field opted for the hard rear Michelin tyre for Sunday’s race.
The opening phase quickly developed into a confrontation between the championship’s two leading contenders. Martín maintained a narrow advantage, but Márquez remained within striking distance, matching his rival’s pace through Motegi’s demanding combination of braking zones and acceleration points.
By the tenth lap, the leading pair had established a clear gap over Bezzecchi, turning the contest into a direct battle for victory.
Lap 11: The decisive overtake
The defining moment arrived on lap 11.
Márquez attacked Martín at Turn 9, committing to an inside move that placed the Ducati ahead of the Aprilia. The manoeuvre changed the direction of the race.
Martín initially remained close, but Márquez gradually established a small yet significant advantage. By lap 15, the gap had grown to approximately eight-tenths of a second.
The Spaniard maintained his rhythm under pressure, producing a succession of competitive laps as Martín attempted to respond.
Rather than allowing the Aprilia rider another opportunity to attack, Márquez increased his pace during the closing stages and crossed the finish line 1.363 seconds ahead.
It was a controlled victory built on decisive racecraft, consistent pace and the ability to execute an overtake at the most important moment.

Bezzecchi survives a late challenge
While the leading pair fought for victory, the battle for third developed into another compelling contest.
Marco Bezzecchi initially appeared comfortable in the final podium position, but Enea Bastianini began closing the gap aboard his KTM.
As the race approached its conclusion, Bastianini produced a series of fast laps that brought him into contention. Bezzecchi responded under pressure and retained third place, giving Aprilia two riders on the podium.
For the Italian manufacturer, the result reinforced its competitiveness against Ducati, even though Márquez had emerged victorious in the main championship confrontation.
A perfect weekend for Márquez
Márquez’s Sunday victory followed his success in Saturday’s Sprint, making Motegi one of his most important weekends of the season.
His Japanese Grand Prix performance combined outright speed with tactical discipline. He resisted the temptation to force an early move against Martín, waited for a suitable opportunity and then managed the race from the front.
The victory was his sixth Grand Prix win of the 2026 campaign and his fourth premier-class triumph at Motegi.

The narrow margin highlighted the significance of the result. Márquez had transformed the championship into a contest in which a single Sprint or Grand Prix result could change the lead.
Martín nevertheless departed Japan at the top of the standings, having limited the damage with an important second-place finish.
Motegi’s wider significance
The Japanese Grand Prix was more than another race victory for Márquez.
It illustrated the increasing intensity of the Ducati–Aprilia rivalry and confirmed that the title contest would be decided through consistency as much as outright speed.
For Ducati, the weekend demonstrated the effectiveness of its factory package in Márquez’s hands. For Aprilia, Martín’s second place and Bezzecchi’s podium offered evidence that the manufacturer remained capable of challenging for victories.
The championship moved on to Indonesia with the leading contenders separated by the smallest of margins.
For Márquez, Motegi was a statement of intent. For Martín, it was a reminder that defending the championship lead would demand everything he could deliver.
