The Bundeswehr has taken a significant step forward in bolstering its air-defense capabilities with the receipt of the prototype Skyranger 30 system. Rheinmetall announced the delivery in a press release on February 5, stating that the verification model had been handed over at the end of January. This milestone marks the beginning of an extensive testing and approval process crucial for integrating the system into Germany’s defense framework.
Testing and Deployment Timeline
The Bundeswehr is expected to commence acceptance testing in the second quarter of 2025, following operational training on the new system. Rheinmetall has projected serial deliveries of the Skyranger 30 to begin in 2027 and extend into early 2028. In February 2024, the Bundeswehr ordered 18 Skyranger 30 systems, mounted on Boxer armored vehicles, for EUR 595 million (USD 617.8 million). The contract includes an option to procure an additional 30 units. Key Features and Capabilities
The Skyranger 30 is designed to serve as a core component of the Bundeswehr’s Nah- und Nächstbereichsschutz (NNbS), Germany’s short- and very-short-range air-defense strategy. Rheinmetall, in partnership with Diehl Defence and Hensoldt Sensors, secured a contract in January 2024 to develop this critical capability.
The system’s turret is armed with a 30×173 mm KCE revolver gun capable of firing advanced hit efficiency and destruction (AHEAD) programmable airburst munitions. Additionally, it is equipped with two surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), initially Stinger missiles, with plans to integrate a newly developed anti-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) missile.
Advanced Sensor and Protection Systems
The Skyranger 30 boasts a sophisticated sensor suite, including:
- Hensoldt Spexer X-band radar for target detection and tracking
- Optical sensors for precise target acquisition
- A thermal camera and day camera to ensure operational effectiveness in various conditions
- A laser rangefinder for enhanced targeting accuracy
Further enhancing its defensive capabilities, the German variant of the Skyranger 30 is fitted with Rheinmetall’s Rapid Obscuring System (ROSY) smoke grenade launchers, designed to provide instant concealment against incoming threats.
