Recently, Vance referenced Catholic theology to justify mass deportations of undocumented immigrants. This position prompted Pope Francis to issue a letter to U.S. bishops, urging them to reject the narrative that illegal immigrants should be treated as criminals, stating that such views contradict Christian teachings.
