Washington, D.C. – March 6, 2025 – U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio appeared on Fox News Wednesday with a cross of ashes on his forehead, a symbol of Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of Lent for Catholics. The religious symbol, imposed on the foreheads of the faithful during Catholic masses, signifies repentance and preparation for Easter.
Ash Wednesday initiates the 40-day Lenten period leading up to Easter Sunday, a time of penance, fasting, and reflection for Catholics. The ashes, traditionally made from the burned palm branches of the previous year’s Palm Sunday, serve as a reminder of human mortality and the Christian belief in resurrection and eternal life.
Rubio, a practicing Catholic, chose to keep the ashes visible during his televised interview, where he discussed key foreign policy issues, including the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. He echoed a stance that the war in Ukraine has become a “proxy conflict between nuclear powers” and advocated for Kyiv to engage in negotiations with Moscow. Regarding Israel’s war with Hamas, Rubio warned that President Donald Trump had “lost patience” with the group and reinforced U.S. demands for the release of hostages still held in Gaza.
Rubio is not the only high-profile Catholic in Trump’s administration. Vice President JD Vance has also frequently invoked his faith to support his political views, including his stance on immigration. Recently, Vance referenced Catholic theology to justify mass deportations of undocumented immigrants. This position prompted Pope Francis to issue a letter to U.S. bishops, urging them to reject the narrative that illegal immigrants should be treated as criminals, stating that such views contradict Christian teachings.
Rubio’s public display of his faith highlights the growing intersection of religion and politics within the current U.S. administration, as Catholic officials navigate spiritual commitments and policy decisions on the world stage.
