Tel Aviv, June 23 — In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed it carried out coordinated airstrikes on six Iranian military airports, destroying at least 15 combat aircraft and helicopters. The operation, reportedly aimed at establishing air superiority and preventing retaliatory strikes, targeted critical infrastructure and air assets across western, eastern, and central Iran.

According to a statement released by the IDF via Telegram, the targets included F-14 and F-5 fighter jets, as well as AH-1 Cobra attack helicopters, which Israeli intelligence assessed were preparing to launch counterattacks against Israeli air operations.

The strikes also hit strategic airfield infrastructure, including runways, refueling facilities, and underground hangars. Satellite imagery released by defense analysts shows significant damage to tarmac areas and signs of secondary explosions consistent with the destruction of fuel and munitions stores.

“The operation is part of a broader strategy to reduce the military potential of the Iranian regime and ensure the security of the State of Israel,” the IDF said in its official statement.

The targeted aircraft, which were reportedly in a heightened state of readiness, were destroyed before they could take off. Israeli military officials indicated the attack was preemptive, based on intelligence suggesting imminent deployment of Iranian air power in response to ongoing Israeli operations in the region.

Iranian authorities have yet to issue a full response, but state-run media acknowledged “multiple explosions” at military airbases and vowed that “appropriate retaliatory measures” would be taken.

The strike comes amid rising tensions in the region, following US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites and Iran’s retaliatory missile attacks on Israeli targets. The broader geopolitical crisis has drawn in regional and global powers, with analysts warning of a potential spiral into full-scale war.

Security experts say the Israeli operation signals a bold attempt to neutralize Iran’s immediate strike capabilities, and may mark a shift toward a more aggressive Israeli air campaign inside Iranian territory — a development not seen on this scale since the height of tensions in previous decades.

The international community has expressed deep concern. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called for “urgent de-escalation” and emphasized the risk of “regional destabilization with far-reaching consequences.”

As damage assessments continue and diplomatic efforts remain in flux, the full implications of this high-stakes military strike are yet to unfold.
