Moscow, August 22, 2025 — Russia has named Colonel General Yevgeny Nikiforov as the new commander of its “North” grouping of forces, the Defense Ministry announced Thursday, confirming earlier reports of a leadership change in the formation responsible for securing the country’s northern border regions against Ukrainian incursions.
The appointment was made during Defense Minister Andrei Belousov’s inspection of the grouping, where Nikiforov briefed him on plans to equip units with high-tech weapons. State media footage showed the general standing alongside Belousov as officers demonstrated drones and other modern equipment, before participating in a medal-awarding ceremony.
