Orem, Utah — The man accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk allegedly admitted responsibility in a private online chat just hours before turning himself in, according to a report published Monday by The Washington Post.
Tyler Robinson, 22, was arrested in connection with the September 10 killing of Kirk, 31, who was shot while speaking to students at Utah Valley University in Orem, roughly 40 miles south of Salt Lake City.
In messages reviewed by The Post, Robinson used his Discord account to inform a small group of friends about his involvement. “Hey guys, I have bad news for you all. It was me at UVU yesterday. I’m sorry for all of this,” Robinson allegedly wrote Thursday evening.
The post came around two hours before authorities said Robinson surrendered with the help of a sheriff acquaintance. In the same chat, he reportedly added, “I’m surrendering through a sheriff friend in a few moments. Thanks for all the good times and laughs, you’ve all been so amazing, thank you all for everything.”
The private Discord group, which included around 30 members, had already been discussing Kirk’s death before Robinson’s admission. Messages shared with The Post showed members reacting with shock as the news spread. “Charlie Kirk got shot,” one member wrote. Another added after watching footage, “Bro didn’t deserve to go out like that, sad.”
The FBI confirmed it is working closely with Discord to trace Robinson’s digital activity. FBI Director Kash Patel said Monday that DNA evidence collected at the scene has matched Robinson, though investigators are continuing to analyze cell phone records, forensic samples, and witness testimony.
Patel emphasized that while Robinson is in custody, the federal probe remains active. “This investigation is ongoing, and we are working in coordination with local and federal prosecutors to ensure a thorough case,” he said.
Kirk, a prominent right-wing activist and founder of the conservative group Turning Point USA, was addressing students when the shooting occurred. His death has prompted an outpouring of grief among supporters and reignited debate over campus security and political violence in the United States.
