Syrian authorities announced the detention and neutralisation of a Daesh-affiliated terror cell that had been preparing attacks in the country’s coastal region. The operation, carried out by internal security units, marks one of the most significant counterterrorism actions since Syria began its political transition in early 2025.
According to the Syrian Interior Ministry, the cell was uncovered and confronted during what officials described as a precise and carefully coordinated security operation in the Badrousieh area, located in the northern countryside of Latakia. Brigadier General Abdulaziz Hilal al Ahmad, head of internal security in the province, stated that the militants had been planning to strike targets along the coastal corridor. This area has generally remained more stable compared with other Syrian regions throughout the conflict years.
During the engagement, two members of the cell were killed, while the remaining militants were apprehended after an intense exchange of fire with security forces. Officials did not provide an exact number of arrests but confirmed that an intelligence officer sustained serious injuries during the clashes. A sizeable cache of weapons and ammunition was also seized, further indicating the scale of the planned operations.
This latest development comes at a crucial moment for Syria, which has been undergoing a profound political shift following the departure of Bashar al-Assad in late 2024. Assad fled to Russia after nearly twenty-five years in power, bringing an end to more than half a century of Ba’ath Party rule.
A transitional government led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa was formed in January with a mandate to stabilise the country, promote institutional reform, rebuild trust among communities, and re-engage with regional and international partners. Counterterrorism remains one of the administration’s highest priorities, particularly as extremist elements continue to exploit the country’s fragile security landscape.
Officials noted that the dismantling of the Daesh-linked cell demonstrates improved coordination among intelligence units and renewed efforts to eliminate threats to the coastal region, which plays a vital role in Syria’s economic recovery. The government has pledged to expand operations aimed at detecting and disrupting militant networks before they can regroup or carry out attacks.
The Interior Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to protecting civilians and strengthening national security, describing the operation as a significant step toward restoring stability and preventing a resurgence of extremist violence in the post-Assad era.
