WASHINGTON/TEHRAN — The death toll from the ongoing nationwide protests in Iran has risen to 6,126, according to a report released on Monday, January 26, 2026, by the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA). As the demonstrations enter their 30th day, the organization reports that the crackdown has become the deadliest in the country’s recent history, with over 41,880 people arrested and at least 11,009 sustaining severe injuries.

The protests, which were triggered on December 28, 2025, by the sharp depreciation of the Iranian rial and deteriorating economic conditions, have spread to all 31 provinces. While HRANA has verified 6,126 deaths, other independent reports suggest the actual figure could be significantly higher due to widespread internet blackouts and the government’s practice of taking bodies directly from hospitals to undisclosed morgues.

Disputed Figures and Rising Violence

The reported numbers vary wildly between official state sources and independent monitors:

  • HRANA: 6,126 confirmed deaths (including 5,777 protesters and 49 non-participants), with thousands more cases still under investigation.

  • Iranian Government: Official figures place the death toll at 3,117, claiming the majority were “civilians and security forces” killed by what they describe as “terrorists.”

  • International Estimates: Outlets like Time and Iran International have cited internal hospital documents and whistleblower sources suggesting that the true death toll from a massive two-day crackdown on January 8–9 could exceed 30,000 to 36,000.

Geopolitical Tensions and Military Posturing

The internal crisis has brought Iran to the brink of a military confrontation with the United States. President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to “hit hard” if the killing of protesters continues, stating that U.S. forces are “locked and loaded” in the region.

In a show of force, the U.S. has deployed an aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East. Meanwhile, the United Nations has voiced “extreme concern” over the rising military rhetoric and the “horrendous” situation on the ground. Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has blamed the unrest on a “foreign plot” orchestrated by the U.S. and Israel, warning that any American intervention would trigger a “comprehensive response.”

A Nation Under Blackout

Independent verification of the casualties remains nearly impossible as the Iranian government maintains a strict 99% internet blackout. Human rights groups warn that the communications silence is being used as a shroud to hide mass executions and the use of heavy weaponry, including truck-mounted machine guns, in residential neighborhoods.

“The scale of the killing appears to dwarf anything previously seen on the streets of Iran,” noted a report from Time, describing hospitals overwhelmed by shooting victims and morgues filled beyond capacity.
