TUCSON, Ariz. — The ten-day search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, reached a dramatic turning point late Tuesday as law enforcement officials announced they have detained an individual for questioning.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that the person was taken into custody during a high-risk traffic stop in an area south of Tucson. While officials have categorized the individual as a “person of interest” rather than a formal suspect, the detention follows the first significant evidence break in a case that has gripped the nation since February 1.

Surveillance and SWAT Activity
The breakthrough came just hours after the FBI released harrowing surveillance footage, recovered from “back-end systems” after the home’s security camera was tampered with. The grainy video depicts a masked and gloved individual, appearing to carry a handgun in a holster, approaching Nancy Guthrie’s front door. The figure is seen attempting to block the camera lens with a handful of foliage before the device was disconnected at 1:47 a.m. on the night of the abduction.
Following the detention, a massive mobilization of tactical units was observed. SWAT vehicles and members of the FBI’s elite Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) swarmed a residence in Rio Rico, Arizona, located approximately 15 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border.
A man identifying himself as “Carlos” spoke to reporters early Wednesday outside the Rio Rico property, claiming he had been the one detained and subsequently released. “I didn’t do anything. I’m innocent,” he stated, though authorities have yet to officially confirm his release or status in the ongoing investigation.
A Family’s “Hour of Desperation”
Nancy Guthrie was last seen on the evening of January 31 after a family dinner. She was reported missing the next morning when she failed to attend church. Investigators later confirmed that blood found on her porch belonged to the octogenarian, and digital data from her pacemaker indicated it was disconnected from her phone at 2:28 a.m. on February 1.
The case has been marked by a series of unverified ransom notes sent to media outlets, demanding $6 million in cryptocurrency. In a series of increasingly emotional videos, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings, Annie and Camron, have pleaded for their mother’s safe return, stressing her need for critical heart and blood pressure medications.
“We believe she is still alive,” Savannah Guthrie wrote in a social media post accompanying the new FBI images. “Bring her home.”
National Attention
The White House has confirmed that President Trump is being briefed on the case, expressing “pure disgust” at the surveillance footage. FBI digital billboards have been deployed across major cities from Texas to California as the search expands.
Despite the recent detention and the search of the Rio Rico property, the Pima County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that Nancy Guthrie has not yet been found. “Time is of the essence,” Sheriff Chris Nanos previously warned, citing the 84-year-old’s limited mobility and health concerns.
