Marco Bezzecchi opened the 2026 MotoGP World Championship with a victory in Thailand, delivering an immediate statement for Aprilia Racing at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram.

The opening round, held from 27 February to 1 March, provided the first competitive picture of the new MotoGP season and ended with Bezzecchi at the centre of the celebrations. On a demanding weekend in Thailand, the Italian converted Aprilia’s pace into the first Grand Prix victory of the championship.

Bezzecchi starts 2026 on top

The opening Grand Prix of a new season always carries additional significance. Months of development, testing and preparation finally give way to competition, while the paddock receives its first meaningful indication of the balance between riders and manufacturers.

In Buriram, it was Bezzecchi and Aprilia who emerged with the strongest result.

The Italian claimed the Grand Prix victory aboard the Aprilia, giving the Noale manufacturer an ideal beginning to its 2026 campaign and putting Bezzecchi immediately among the central figures of the new championship.

It was also an important early result in the manufacturers’ battle. With Ducati, KTM, Honda and Yamaha all beginning another season of development and competition, Aprilia left Thailand with the most important prize of the opening Sunday.

A demanding start in Buriram

The Chang International Circuit has become one of MotoGP’s distinctive modern venues.

Its combination of heavy braking zones, long acceleration phases and technical sections places considerable demands on both machinery and riders. Thailand’s heat adds another dimension, with tyre management, physical endurance and consistency becoming increasingly important across a full race distance.

That made Buriram an appropriate first examination of the 2026 field.

Throughout the weekend, teams worked to understand their new packages under genuine race conditions. The opening round was not simply about securing points. It provided the first significant data of the year on race pace, tyre behaviour and the relative performance of the manufacturers.

When the decisive Grand Prix arrived, Bezzecchi delivered.

Aprilia makes an immediate statement

Victory at the first race gives Aprilia more than a trophy.

It establishes momentum.

The Italian manufacturer entered the new season looking to challenge consistently at the front, and a victory in Thailand provides an immediate foundation for that ambition.

For Bezzecchi, the result is equally significant. Beginning a championship with a Grand Prix victory changes the early dynamic of a season. Rather than immediately chasing points, he leaves the opening weekend having already demonstrated that he can deliver when victory is available.

The championship is far too long for conclusions after a single weekend, but the first message of 2026 is clear: Bezzecchi and Aprilia are part of the fight.

The championship begins

Thailand represented only Round 1 of a 22-round campaign that will take MotoGP across Europe, Asia, the Americas and Australia before the season reaches its conclusion in Valencia at the end of November.

That scale means fortunes will change repeatedly.

Different circuits will favour different motorcycles. Development programmes will alter the competitive order. Injuries, weather, qualifying performances and Sprint races will all influence the championship.

But every title campaign begins somewhere.

For Bezzecchi, 2026 begins with a Grand Prix victory.

For Aprilia, it begins at the front.

And for the rest of the MotoGP field, Buriram provided the first benchmark of a championship that has only just started.
