RIYADH/BEIRUT — The conflict in the Middle East, sparked by coordinated U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran, entered its fourth day on Tuesday with a dramatic expansion of the battlefield. New fronts have opened in Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, while the death toll in Iran continues to climb following the decapitation of its top leadership.
Attack on the US Embassy in Riyadh
In a significant escalation targeting American diplomatic interests, the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh was struck by two drones early Tuesday morning. The Saudi Ministry of Defense confirmed that its air defenses intercepted a total of eight drones near the capital and Al Kharj, but two reached the diplomatic compound, sparking a “limited fire” and causing minor structural damage.
The U.S. Mission has since closed for all routine services and issued a “shelter-in-place” order for American citizens in Jeddah, Riyadh, and Dhahran. This follows a similar attack on the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait just 24 hours prior.
Israel Expands Offensive to Lebanon
While the primary focus remains on Operation Epic Fury in Iran, Israel has now officially turned its attention to the north. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz have authorized the IDF to advance and take control of “additional strategic positions” in Southern Lebanon.
The move follows a series of retaliatory strikes by Hezbollah, which targeted three Israeli bases, Ramat David, Meron, and a site in the Golan Heights, with drones and rockets. The Lebanese militant group claimed these actions were “revenge” for the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In response, Israeli jets conducted simultaneous strikes in Tehran and Beirut, destroying Hezbollah command centers and the headquarters of the Al-Manar and Al-Nour broadcasters.

Casualties and Diplomatic Defiance
The human cost of the four-day conflict is rising rapidly:
-
In Iran: The Iranian Red Crescent Society reports at least 787 deaths resulting from the joint U.S.-Israeli air campaign.
-
U.S. Forces: Six American service members have been confirmed killed, with 18 others seriously wounded.
-
In Israel: Eleven civilians have died, and hundreds have been injured by retaliatory Iranian and Hezbollah fire.
President Donald Trump remains steadfast, suggesting the campaign could last “four to five weeks” and warning that a response to the Riyadh embassy attack would be revealed “soon.” Prime Minister Netanyahu echoed this resolve on Fox News, describing the campaign as a “fast and decisive” effort to permanently dismantle Iran’s nuclear and missile programs before they become “immune” to attack.
Global Impact
The war has sent shockwaves through the global economy, with oil prices surging and international stock markets seeing sharp declines. As the U.S. and Israel pursue “regime change” in Tehran, the region remains on a knife-edge, with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) vowing to continue strikes against American assets in Bahrain and across the Gulf.
