MOSCOW — In a blistering assessment of the escalating crisis in the Middle East, Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, warned on Monday that the world is on the precipice of a global conflict. Medvedev asserted that World War III will “undoubtedly begin” if U.S. President Donald Trump persists in what he termed an “insane course” of forced regime change.
The former Russian president’s remarks, delivered in an interview with the state news agency TASS, follow the shockwaves of “Operation Epic Fury.” The coordinated U.S.-Israeli military campaign, launched on February 27, 2026, resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with several members of his family and high-ranking military officials.
“A Grave Mistake”
Medvedev characterized the assassination as a “cynical atrocity” and a “grave mistake” that has compromised the safety of all Americans. By turning the Ayatollah into a “martyr” for nearly 300 million Shiites globally, Medvedev argued that Trump has inadvertently unified the Iranian people and radicalized the region.
“If Trump continues his insane course of criminally changing political regimes, [World War III] will undoubtedly begin. And any event could be the trigger. Any event,” Medvedev warned.
He further predicted that Tehran, now fueled by “redoubled energy,” will pursue nuclear weapons as a matter of survival, dismissing previous diplomatic efforts as a mere “cover operation” by the West.
European “Vassals” and Global Institutions
The interview was marked by Medvedev’s signature acerbic rhetoric toward Western allies. He described European leaders as “vassals” who have blindly supported the U.S.-Israeli strikes.
Medvedev also aimed at the International Olympic Committee (IOC), suggesting the organization should be dissolved and rebuilt. He accused the body of hypocrisy for banning Russian athletes while allowing U.S. and Israeli competitors to remain despite the current military campaign.
The Nuclear Shadow
Addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Medvedev acknowledged fears that Moscow is being “coaxed” into negotiations simply to allow Kyiv time to rearm. He reiterated that the only true guarantee against Western intervention in Russia is the fear of a nuclear exchange, stating that in such a scenario, the tragedies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki would look like “child’s play in a sandbox.”
As Tehran reels from the loss of its top leadership and the Middle East enters a “radiological and humanitarian abyss,” the Kremlin appears to be positioning itself as a guardian of international law while simultaneously rattling the nuclear saber.
