WASHINGTON D.C. — In a development that threatens to complicate both the Middle East war and the ongoing peace efforts in Eastern Europe, intelligence officials have confirmed that Russia is providing active intelligence support to Iran. The move comes as Tehran struggles to defend its infrastructure against a week-long, high-intensity offensive by the United States and Israel.
A New Layer of Complexity
A senior intelligence official told Scripps News that Russian assistance includes real-time data aimed at helping Iran anticipate and counter U.S.-led airstrikes. This “intelligence sharing” follows the destruction of nearly 200 Iranian targets and the deaths of top leadership figures, including the Supreme Leader, since February 28.

While President Donald Trump has yet to comment on the Russian involvement, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed the notion that Moscow’s posture could hinder American efforts.
“We are achieving the military objectives of this operation and that is going to continue because the United States military is the best and most lethal fighting force in the world,” Leavitt stated on Friday.
The “Geneva Track”: Ukraine Peace Talks Persist
Despite Russia’s support for Iran, a direct adversary of the U.S. in the current conflict, negotiations to end the war in Ukraine appear to be moving forward on a separate track.
Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, who recently concluded a third round of trilateral talks in Geneva alongside Jared Kushner, signaled that the diplomatic channel remains open.
-
Prisoner Exchange: A successful swap of prisoners took place earlier this week.
-
Ongoing Dialogue: Witkoff expressed optimism for “additional progress” in the coming weeks, aiming for a final peace deal under President Trump’s leadership.
The Ukraine Factor: Experts in “Shahed” Warfare
In a historic strategic irony, the United States has officially requested military assistance from Ukraine to help counter the Iranian-made “Shahed” drones currently targeting U.S. and allied interests in the Persian Gulf.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the request in a post on X, noting that he has dispatched Ukrainian specialists to the Middle East. Having spent years modernizing drone warfare and developing countermeasures against Iranian technology used by Russia, Ukrainian experts are now considered the global authority on neutralizing these specific platforms.
| Strategic Support Roles | Entity | Objective |
| Intelligence Sharing | Russia → Iran | Countering U.S./Israeli airstrikes. |
| Drone Defense | Ukraine → U.S./Allies | Neutralizing “Shahed” drone threats in the Middle East. |
| Peace Negotiations | U.S. / Russia / Ukraine | Formulating an end to the war in Europe. |
The Stakes for Washington
The situation places Washington in a delicate balancing act: engaging in high-level peace talks with Moscow regarding Ukraine, while simultaneously facing Russian intelligence on the battlefield in Iran. Analysts suggest that the U.S. may use the progress in the Geneva talks as leverage to pressure Moscow into withdrawing its support for Tehran.
