VATICAN CITY — In a strategic move to navigate increasingly fractured relations with the White House, Pope Leo XIV announced on Saturday the appointment of Archbishop Gabriele Caccia as the new Apostolic Nuncio (ambassador) to the United States.
Caccia, a 68-year-old veteran of the Vatican’s diplomatic corps, currently serves as the Holy See’s Permanent Observer to the United Nations. He succeeds Cardinal Christophe Pierre, 80, who is retiring after a tenure marked by tension with both the Trump administration and the conservative wing of the U.S. hierarchy.
A Mission of “Trepidation”
Archbishop Caccia’s appointment comes at a historical crossroads as the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary later this year.
“I receive this mission with both joy and a sense of trepidation,” Caccia stated via Vatican News, noting that his work would be “at the service of communion and peace.” His previous experience as ambassador to Lebanon and the Philippines is seen as critical, given the current geopolitical instability in the Middle East and the Vatican’s focus on global migration.
The Rift: Leo XIV vs. the Trump Administration
The American-born Pope Leo XIV, elected last May following the death of Pope Francis, has become one of the most vocal critics of President Trump’s foreign and domestic policies. The friction points are numerous:
-
The War in Iran: Following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Tehran, the Pope warned that “stability and peace are not built with weapons” and made a “heartfelt appeal” to stop the spiral of violence before it becomes an “irreparable abyss.”
-
Military Action in Venezuela: In a major January policy speech, Leo XIV lamented that “war is back in vogue,” a direct critique of the U.S. military intervention in South America.
-
Immigration: Last fall, the Pope sparked a White House rebuke after suggesting that “inhuman treatment of immigrants” is inconsistent with a “pro-life” stance. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt responded by rejecting the characterization, insisting the administration enforces laws as humanely as possible.
The Domestic Catholic Landscape
The appointment of Caccia is also expected to influence the internal dynamics of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). Cardinal Pierre’s departure removes a figure who often represented the more progressive priorities of the papacy, which sometimes clashed with the American bishops’ focus on cultural issues.
Despite the Pope’s criticisms, President Trump enjoys significant domestic support from the Catholic electorate, having won 59% of the Catholic vote in the 2024 election. Trump has maintained a cordial, if distanced, public tone toward the Pontiff, recently referring to him as a “lovely man” while noting that the Pope’s own brother is “serious MAGA.”
Comparison of Key Issues: Vatican vs. White House
| Issue | Vatican Position (Leo XIV) | White House Position (Trump) |
| Middle East | Calls for “authentic dialogue”; warns of tragedy. | Operation Epic Fury; “Unconditional Surrender” demand. |
| Immigration | Treatment labeled “inhuman” and not “pro-life.” | Strict enforcement; “Shield of the Americas” policy. |
| Venezuela | Condemns the “zeal for war” and military intervention. | National security priority; military “restoration of order.” |
