ISTANBUL / WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a development that further internationalizes the 12-day-old war in Iran, reports emerged Wednesday that Russia has begun sharing advanced drone tactics, honed during its four-year invasion of Ukraine, with Tehran to help its forces strike U.S. and Gulf targets.

According to Western intelligence officials cited by CNN and Anadolu Agency, the level of support has moved beyond general “targeting assistance” to specific operational guidance. The shift is being described by officials as increasingly “concerning,” as it suggests Moscow is actively helping Iran bypass American-made air defense systems that have so far intercepted hundreds of incoming projectiles.

TACTICAL EXCHANGE

Analysts suggest the tactical sharing likely focuses on:

  • Swarming Techniques: Using large numbers of low-cost Shahed-style drones to overwhelm radar systems.

  • Low-Altitude Navigation: Routes designed to evade the “Eye of God” surveillance network by hugging terrain.

  • Electronic Warfare Integration: Methods for “spoofing” or jamming GPS signals, a tactic that has already caused chaos for merchant shipping in the Gulf this week.

THE KREMLIN’S DENIAL

Despite the intelligence assessments, the diplomatic narrative remains carefully managed. US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff stated Tuesday that President Vladimir Putin personally assured President Donald Trump that Moscow is not sharing intelligence on American military assets with Tehran.

When pushed by reporters, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declined to confirm any military or intelligence assistance, stating only that Russia remains “in dialogue” with the Iranian leadership. The White House has largely downplayed the reports, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt asserting that any such aid is “not making a difference” because the U.S. is “completely decimating” Iranian military infrastructure.

THE UKRAINIAN COUNTER-DEPLOYMENT

In a striking geopolitical irony, the war has seen Ukraine move to support the U.S. effort. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine has deployed its own drone specialists and interceptor drones to protect U.S. bases in the Middle East.

“Ukraine knows how to defend against Shahed drone attacks because our cities have faced them almost every night,” the Ukrainian Ambassador to the U.S., Olga Stefanishyna, noted. “When our partners are in need, we are always ready to help.”

A MULTI-FRONT SHADOW WAR

The revelation of Russian tactical aid comes as Iranian strikes continue to hit regional targets. On Wednesday alone:

  • Bahrain: Naval headquarters for the U.S. Middle East fleet faced drone incursions.

  • Dubai: Four people were injured when two drones crashed near the international airport.

  • Qatar: Iranian missiles reportedly damaged a U.S.-made AN/FPS-132 early warning radar station.

As the B-52s at RAF Fairford prepare for their next “Bomber Pulse,” the conflict is increasingly looking like a global proxy war, with Russian tactics and Ukrainian counter-measures clashing in the skies over the Persian Gulf.
