HOMELAND SECURITY ALERT

LOS ANGELES / WASHINGTON, D.C. — The FBI has issued a cautionary alert to California law enforcement agencies, warning that Iran may seek to retaliate for ongoing U.S. airstrikes by launching unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from unidentified vessels positioned off the American West Coast.

The alert, reviewed by ABC News and CBS News on Wednesday, stems from intelligence acquired as early as February 2026. It suggests that the Iranian regime “aspired” to conduct a surprise drone attack against unspecified targets in California in the event of a direct military confrontation with the United States. This scenario materialized with the launch of Operation Epic Fury on February 28.

“CAUTIONARY” VS. “IMMINENT”

While the memo has sparked significant concern, federal and state officials have moved to temper public anxiety by noting the unverified nature of the specific threat.

  • The Intelligence: The FBI noted it has “no additional information on the timing, method, target, or perpetrators” of the alleged plot.

  • The State Response: Governor Gavin Newsom confirmed that California has elevated its security posture but stated, “While we are not aware of any imminent threats at this time, we remain prepared for any emergency.”

  • Local Readiness: The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has increased patrols around critical infrastructure, cultural institutions, and places of worship out of an “abundance of caution.”

THE “CONTAINERIZED” THREAT

Military experts have long warned about the difficulty of defending against “containerized” drone systems, unmarked merchant ships that can house dozens of loitering munitions (kamikaze drones) in standard shipping containers.

“If you think about the idea that a container shipping box anywhere in the world can open its lid… that’s not a particularly difficult concept,” said Army Secretary Dan Driscoll. Once the lid is open, drones can be launched and guided through existing global cell networks, making them difficult to track before they reach their targets.

THE MEXICO DIMENSION

Adding a layer of complexity, intelligence officials are also monitoring the potential for Iranian “sleeper cells” or proxy actors to operate via the southern border. Former DHS intelligence chief John Cohen noted that Iran maintains extensive networks in Mexico and South America, raising the possibility of a multi-directional drone threat.

This warning comes as Iran continues its regional retaliation in the Middle East, having already launched thousands of drones at U.S. and allied positions in the Gulf. While the Pentagon reports that 83% of Iranian one-way drone capabilities have been degraded since the war began, the FBI alert serves as a stark reminder that the “front lines” of the 2026 war are increasingly global.
