WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump ignited a fresh wave of political controversy on Saturday, following the announcement of the death of former FBI Director and Special Counsel Robert Mueller. In a characteristically blunt and inflammatory response, Trump took to social media to celebrate the passing of the man who once led the high-stakes investigation into his 2016 campaign’s ties to Russia.

“Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead,” Trump posted on Truth Social shortly after the news broke. The President added, “He can no longer hurt innocent people!”

Robert Mueller, who was 81, passed away Friday night surrounded by family, according to a statement released Saturday morning. While a specific cause of death was not initially released, Mueller had been battling Parkinson’s disease since 2021, a diagnosis that led to his quiet withdrawal from public life and legal practice.

Mueller’s career was defined by a lifetime of public service, including a decorated stint in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and a 12-year tenure as the Director of the FBI, the second-longest in the bureau’s history. He took the helm of the FBI just one week before the September 11 attacks, overseeing its massive transformation into a counterterrorism-focused agency.

However, his 2017 appointment as Special Counsel cemented his role as a central figure in the Trump era. For 22 months, Mueller’s team conducted a silent, methodical investigation into Russian election interference. While his final report did not find a criminal conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Moscow, it famously declined to exonerate the President of obstruction of justice, stating, “If we had confidence… that the President clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so.”

Trump’s reaction to Mueller’s passing stands in stark contrast to the tributes pouring in from across the political spectrum. The FBI Agents Association praised Mueller’s “unwavering commitment to the FBI’s mission,” while former colleagues described him as a man of “absolute integrity.”

Current FBI Director Kash Patel, a staunch Trump loyalist, did not immediately issue a public statement regarding the death.

As the nation reflects on Mueller’s complex legacy, one marked by both institutional reverence and deep partisan division, the President’s remarks serve as a stark reminder of the enduring bitterness of the “witch hunt” narrative that has defined his relationship with the nation’s intelligence community.
