MEXICO CITY — Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez has signaled a clear intent to test his squad’s depth, handing starting roles to Sporting CP goalkeeper Rui Silva and Mallorca midfielder Samu Costa for tonight’s high-profile friendly against Mexico.
The match, held in the early hours of Sunday (Western European Time), marks a significant milestone for Rui Silva. Despite being a frequent presence in Martínez’s call-ups, the Sporting shot-stopper is earning only his second international cap.
In the heart of the midfield, Samu Costa continues his rapid integration into the senior setup. The Mallorca standout is set to make his third appearance for the “Seleção,” anchoring a midfield that balances veteran leadership with experimental energy.
Tactical Recalls and Defensive Shifts
The starting eleven also features the return of António Silva and Matheus Nunes to the lineup, a configuration not seen since 2024. Martínez appears to be using the fixture to evaluate defensive rotations, placing the young duo alongside Renato Veiga and the established Nuno Mendes.
Rúben Neves and Bruno Fernandes provide the creative engine in midfield, supporting a dynamic front three of Francisco Conceição, Gonçalo Ramos, and João Félix.
Mexico’s “Portuguese” Connection
The hosts, meanwhile, have named a lineup that resonates with Portuguese football fans. Former Benfica striker Raúl Jiménez leads the attack for “El Tri,” while Spanish-born midfielder Álvaro Fidalgo makes his highly anticipated debut for Mexico following his naturalization.
The atmosphere at the stadium is expected to be electric, providing a rigorous litmus test for Portugal’s rotated side as they prepare for the competitive intensity of the upcoming Nations League cycle.
