SEOUL, South Korea — HYBE, the South Korean entertainment powerhouse behind global icons BTS, has officially appointed media titan Kevin Mayer to its Board of Directors. The announcement, made following a shareholders’ meeting on March 31, signals a strategic push by the company to further cement its influence in the Western media landscape.

Mayer, a Los Angeles-based executive with a storied career at Disney and a brief but high-profile stint as the CEO of TikTok, joins HYBE as a non-executive director. His appointment comes at a time of record-breaking growth and organizational restructuring for the K-pop giant.

A Strategic Bridge to the West

The connection between Mayer and HYBE reportedly traces back to 2022, when Mayer’s Blackstone-backed firm, Candle Media, acquired Exile Content Studio. That firm was co-founded by Isaac Lee, the current Chairman and CEO of HYBE America. Analysts suggest that Mayer’s deep roots in Hollywood and his expertise in global streaming will be invaluable as HYBE America undergoes a significant rebrand, recently launching Blue Highway Records in Nashville.

Mayer’s resume is among the most formidable in the entertainment industry. During his 22-year tenure at Disney, he served as Chief Strategy Officer, where he orchestrated the landmark acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and 21st Century Fox. Later, as Chairman of Direct-to-Consumer & International, he led the explosive launch of Disney+, which garnered 50 million subscribers in its first five months.

Navigating “Arirang” and Global Expansion

The timing of Mayer’s arrival coincides with HYBE’s most ambitious year to date. The company reported record annual revenues of $1.86 billion for 2025, fueled by the massive success of BTS’s comeback. The group’s latest album, Arirang, shattered streaming records on Spotify and Apple Music upon its March 20 release.

HYBE is currently preparing for the “BTS World Tour: ARIRANG,” a massive 82-show stadium circuit spanning 23 countries. Mayer’s experience managing global operations for ByteDance and Disney is expected to provide critical oversight as HYBE transitions from a music label into a comprehensive global platform company.

A Career of Rapid Transitions

Mayer’s career has not been without its challenges. In 2020, he became TikTok’s first U.S.-based CEO but resigned after only four months due to the Trump administration’s pressure on parent company ByteDance to sell its U.S. operations. Since then, he has served as a senior adviser to Access Industries (owner of Warner Music Group) and chaired the board of the sports streaming platform DAZN.

In addition to his new role at HYBE, Mayer continues to lead Candle Media and Smash Capital. He also serves on the boards of Harvard Business School and the Paley Center for Media.

With Mayer on the board, HYBE appears positioned to move beyond the traditional boundaries of K-pop, leveraging his expertise to navigate the complex intersections of technology, content acquisition, and global distribution.
