Russia has begun a new series of missile test launches involving systems with nuclear capabilities at the Kura training ground in the Kamchatka region, regional authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

According to a statement issued by the regional government, the military exercises are scheduled to continue through May 10 as part of ongoing strategic weapons testing and combat readiness drills.

Officials urged residents to avoid the area during the exercises and warned that access to the training zone and surrounding territory would be strictly prohibited throughout the operation.

“The presence and movement of people and any type of equipment is prohibited,” the statement said.

Strategic military site

The Kura training ground, operated by the Russian Aerospace Forces, is located roughly 500 kilometers north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in a remote swampy area near the Ozernaya River.

The facility is considered one of Russia’s most important missile testing sites and has long served as a destination point for warheads launched from other military ranges across the country.

Since the Soviet era, Kura has been used for intercontinental ballistic missile exercises involving launches from facilities such as the Plesetsk Cosmodrome and the Kapustin Yar testing range.

Russian military authorities regularly conduct missile exercises at the site several times each year.

The drills can include tests of newly developed missile systems as well as training launches carried out by the Strategic Missile Forces.

Rising geopolitical tensions

The announcement comes amid heightened global tensions involving nuclear powers and increased military activity across several regions, including Eastern Europe, the Arctic, and the Indo-Pacific.

Russia has continued expanding strategic weapons modernization programs in recent years while emphasizing the readiness of its nuclear deterrent forces.

The latest exercises are expected to be closely monitored by Western governments and defense analysts, given ongoing security concerns linked to Russia’s military posture and broader geopolitical competition.

No further details were immediately released regarding the specific missile systems involved in the current tests.
