U.S. intelligence agencies reportedly believe that Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is playing an active role in shaping Tehran’s wartime strategy and negotiations with Washington despite remaining largely out of public view following injuries sustained during the conflict.

According to a report published Friday by CNN, American intelligence assessments indicate that uncertainty still surrounds the exact level of authority currently exercised by Khamenei within Iran’s leadership structure after the war killed several senior officials, including his father.

Communications Continue Despite Injuries

The report, citing sources familiar with U.S. intelligence findings, said officials believe Mojtaba Khamenei has continued communicating through trusted couriers and private in-person contacts while recovering from injuries that reportedly include burns and shrapnel wounds.

Iranian officials have publicly rejected speculation about his health condition.

Mazaher Hosseini said Friday that Khamenei’s condition had improved and dismissed rumors suggesting serious deterioration.

The Iranian leadership has maintained tight control over information surrounding internal decision-making since the escalation of the conflict with the United States and Israel earlier this year.

Iranian Military Capabilities Remain Operational

The intelligence assessment reportedly concluded that although Iran’s military infrastructure suffered substantial damage from American strikes, the country’s operational capabilities were not fully eliminated.

Officials believe many missile launchers and strategic systems remain functional despite weeks of attacks targeting military facilities and command centers.

The report added that senior members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps are currently handling much of the country’s security and operational planning.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf is reportedly playing a central role in overseeing daily government affairs during the ongoing crisis.

Diplomatic Efforts Continue

The developments come as indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States continue amid efforts to prevent a broader regional escalation.

The Trump administration has repeatedly stated that any future agreement must guarantee Iran cannot develop nuclear weapons, while Tehran continues insisting its nuclear program is intended for peaceful purposes.

Regional tensions remain high around the Strait of Hormuz, where military deployments, naval operations and shipping disruptions have intensified concerns about global energy security and the risk of wider confrontation.

Analysts say the emergence of Mojtaba Khamenei as a central figure in Iran’s wartime leadership could reshape the country’s internal political structure and influence future negotiations with Western powers.
