Apple has officially released iOS 26.5 following several months of beta testing, introducing a collection of new security, messaging, and interoperability features for iPhone users.

While the update does not include the long-awaited next-generation Siri capabilities expected to arrive with iOS 27, Apple’s latest software release still brings several notable changes across Messages, Maps, accessories, and privacy protections.

End-to-End Encryption Arrives for RCS Messaging

One of the most significant additions in iOS 26.5 is support for end-to-end encryption for Rich Communication Services conversations between iPhone and Android users.

The feature allows compatible RCS messages to receive protections similar to those already available through iMessage conversations between Apple devices.

Encrypted RCS chats are marked with a small lock symbol inside the Messages app and are enabled by default on supported carriers.

Apple said both the sender and receiver must use carriers supporting the latest RCS standards for encryption to function properly.

The feature is expected to roll out gradually, depending on carrier support worldwide.

New Pride Luminance Wallpaper

The update also introduces a new customizable Pride Luminance wallpaper featuring multiple vibrant color combinations.

Apple regularly releases special wallpapers connected to Pride Month and other annual initiatives as part of its software updates.

Maps App Adds Suggested Places Feature

The built-in Apple Maps app now includes a Suggested Places function designed to recommend destinations based on recent searches, user behavior, and nearby trends.

The feature aims to make local discovery more dynamic by surfacing restaurants, attractions, and frequently visited areas automatically.

EU Users Gain Expanded Third-Party Wearable Support

To comply with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, Apple is expanding interoperability for third-party accessories in European markets.

The changes allow compatible third-party earbuds, smartwatches, and televisions to access features previously limited to products such as Apple Watch and AirPods.

New capabilities include:

• Proximity pairing similar to AirPods one-touch setup
• Interactive iPhone notifications on third-party smartwatches
• Support for displaying Live Activities on external wearable devices

Apple noted that accessory manufacturers will still need to implement compatibility updates before the features become widely available.

The interoperability expansion is limited to users located inside the EU whose Apple accounts are registered within European countries.

Easier iPhone-to-Android Transfers

Apple also introduced new options for transferring message attachments when moving from an iPhone to an Android device.

Users can now choose whether to transfer all attachments, only one year of history, or just the last 30 days of content.

The feature appears aimed at simplifying migration between ecosystems amid increasing regulatory scrutiny regarding platform openness.

Apple Books and Keyboard Updates

Inside the Apple Books app, iOS 26.5 includes references to upcoming awards features that may be connected to future reading statistics or annual summaries.

The update additionally introduces support for an Inuktitut keyboard layout, expanding Apple’s language accessibility options.

More Than 50 Security Vulnerabilities Patched

Apple confirmed that iOS 26.5 addresses more than 50 security vulnerabilities across the operating system.

Although none of the flaws are currently known to have been actively exploited, cybersecurity experts recommend updating devices as soon as possible to ensure the latest protections are installed.

The company continues prioritizing software security amid growing concerns over mobile cyber threats, surveillance tools, and digital privacy vulnerabilities affecting smartphones globally.
