Evika Siliņa resigned from her position on Thursday, triggering the collapse of Latvia’s coalition government after mounting political pressure and threats from the opposition to introduce a no-confidence motion.

The resignation plunges Latvia into political uncertainty at a time of heightened regional security tensions linked to the war in neighboring Ukraine.

According to Latvian public broadcaster LSM, Siliņa stepped down after her coalition government entered a deep crisis earlier this week.

Drone Incident Sparked Political Crisis

The political turmoil intensified following an incident on May 7 involving two Ukrainian drones that crossed the Russian border and eventually crashed inside Latvian territory.

Siliņa blamed Defence Minister Andris Sprūds for what she described as a failure to deploy Latvia’s anti-drone systems quickly enough to respond to the intrusion.

Her public criticism of Sprūds and subsequent calls for his resignation exposed growing fractures inside the coalition government.

The dispute quickly escalated into a broader political crisis, weakening support for Siliņa’s administration and encouraging opposition parties to prepare a motion of no confidence.

Ukraine Blamed Russian Electronic Warfare

Ukrainian officials said the drones had originally been intended for targets elsewhere but accused Russia of diverting them through electronic warfare systems.

The incident fueled security concerns across the Baltic region, where governments remain highly sensitive to military spillover from the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

Latvia, a member of both NATO and the European Union, has significantly strengthened border and air defense measures since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began.

President to Hold Talks With Political Parties

Following Siliņa’s resignation, Edgars Rinkēvičs is expected to meet representatives from all parliamentary parties on Friday to discuss the formation of a new government.

The collapse of the coalition raises uncertainty over who could emerge as the next prime minister and whether current governing alliances can remain intact.

Political analysts say Latvia could face prolonged coalition negotiations given the fragmented nature of the country’s parliament.

Security Concerns Dominate Baltic Politics

The government crisis highlights how security concerns linked to the war in Ukraine continue to reshape domestic politics across Eastern Europe and the Baltic states.

Latvia has consistently warned about the risks posed by Russian military activity near its borders and has advocated for stronger NATO defense measures in the region.

The drone incident also reignited debate over Latvia’s military preparedness and the effectiveness of its air defense systems in responding to unconventional threats.

Observers note that public confidence in national security institutions has become increasingly important as regional tensions remain elevated.

Uncertain Political Future

Siliņa’s resignation marks another major political shift in Europe amid wider instability linked to security pressures, economic uncertainty, and geopolitical confrontation between Russia and Western allies.

The coming days are expected to determine whether Latvia’s political establishment can quickly assemble a replacement coalition or whether the country could face early elections.

For now, the resignation leaves one of NATO’s frontline Baltic members navigating both political upheaval and growing regional security concerns.
