Pope Leo XIV has expressed profound sorrow following the assassination of Bishop Osório Citora Afonso of Quelimane, whose death has shocked Mozambique’s Catholic community and prompted widespread calls for justice and unity.

The Vatican confirmed on Saturday that the bishop, who also served as Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Beira, was found dead at the episcopal residence in Quelimane. According to preliminary findings from Mozambican investigators, he was fatally shot in the chest and heart during an attack carried out by unidentified assailants.

In a message released through the Holy See Press Office, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni conveyed the Pope’s condolences while the pontiff was on an apostolic visit to Spain.

“Pope Leo XIV learned with sorrow of the grave act of violence that caused the death of His Excellency Bishop Osório Citora Afonso,” the statement said. The Pope assured the faithful of his prayers and asked God to grant comfort to the people of the Diocese of Quelimane and all of Mozambique during what he described as a time of confusion and grief.

Investigation Underway

Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) said the bishop was killed during the early hours of Saturday at his official residence. Investigators believe the attackers climbed the residence’s perimeter wall, disabled the electrical security system, and entered the property before opening fire.

Maximino Amílcar, spokesperson for SERNIC in Zambézia Province, told journalists that Bishop Afonso was struck by at least one bullet directly in the heart.

Authorities have not yet identified suspects, and no arrests have been made at the time of the announcement. Investigators have declined to speculate on a motive while forensic examinations and witness interviews continue.

Officials described the case as an aggravated homicide and stressed that all available resources were being mobilized to uncover those responsible.

Church Leaders Express Grief

The Catholic Church in Mozambique reacted with shock and sadness to the killing.

Archbishop Inácio Saúre of Nampula, president of the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique, called on Catholics across the country to respond with faith, prayer, and solidarity.

Bishop Afonso had been serving as Secretary General of the Episcopal Conference and was widely respected for his pastoral leadership and dedication to evangelization. Between 2017 and 2023, he also worked at the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelization, focusing on missionary territories and emerging local churches.

His death has been described by church leaders as a severe blow to both the Catholic community and the broader Mozambican society.

National Leaders Condemn the Killing

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo expressed deep sorrow over the bishop’s death, calling it an irreparable loss for the nation.

In a statement, Chapo praised Bishop Afonso’s commitment to humility, peace, reconciliation, and service to the people. He noted that the bishop’s influence extended far beyond the Church and that his voice had become an important symbol of dialogue and national unity.

Opposition politician Venâncio Mondlane also condemned what he described as the “brutal assassination” of the bishop, arguing that the attack represented an assault on the values of peace and reconciliation that Bishop Afonso consistently promoted.

A Life Dedicated to Service

A member of the Consolata Missionaries, Bishop Osório Citora Afonso was appointed Bishop of Quelimane on July 25, 2025. In April 2026, Pope Leo XIV named him interim administrator of the Archdiocese of Beira, entrusting him with additional responsibilities during a period of transition.

Known for his pastoral dedication and commitment to social harmony, he had become one of the most prominent figures in the Mozambican Catholic Church.

As investigations continue, tributes have poured in from across the country, with many expressing hope that those responsible for the killing will be brought to justice and that the bishop’s message of peace will endure despite the tragedy.
