Today in History, June 15: The Day a Sheep Helped Change the History of Medicine

On June 15, 1667, French physician Jean-Baptiste Denis, personal doctor to the court of King Louis XIV, carried out one of the boldest and most controversial medical experiments of the early modern era. In Paris, Denis attempted what is widely recognized as the first fully documented blood transfusion between living beings, transferring blood from a sheep into a human patient.

The recipient was a 15-year-old boy suffering from a severe fever after repeated bloodletting treatments, a common medical practice of the period. Believing that the gentle temperament of a lamb might calm the patient’s illness, Denis and his surgical assistant infused a small quantity of lamb’s blood into the boy’s bloodstream. Against all expectations, the teenager survived the procedure and reportedly recovered, while, according to later accounts, the sheep survived as well.

The experiment came at a time when physicians were only beginning to understand the circulation of blood. Just a few decades earlier, English physician William Harvey had demonstrated that blood circulates continuously through the body, overturning centuries of medical doctrine. Harvey’s discoveries inspired a new generation of scientists who wondered whether blood itself might be used as a treatment for disease.

Denis was not alone in this pursuit. Researchers in England, particularly members of the newly founded Royal Society, had already experimented with transfusions between animals. Yet Denis became the first to document a successful animal-to-human transfusion in detail, recording the procedure, the patient’s symptoms, and the apparent recovery that followed.

Encouraged by the outcome, Denis conducted several additional transfusions over the following months. However, one later patient died after receiving calf’s blood, leading to accusations of murder and a sensational legal case. Although Denis was ultimately cleared of wrongdoing, the controversy prompted authorities in France and England to prohibit blood transfusion experiments. For more than 150 years, the practice would largely disappear from medicine.

The true scientific breakthrough would come only in 1901, when Austrian physician Karl Landsteiner discovered the human ABO blood group system, revealing why some transfusions succeeded while others proved fatal. His work laid the foundation for modern transfusion medicine and earned him the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1930.

Today, blood transfusions save millions of lives every year, from emergency trauma care to complex surgeries and cancer treatments. While Denis’s experiment was based on incomplete knowledge and methods that would now be considered unsafe, his willingness to push the boundaries of contemporary science marked an important, if unconventional, step in the long journey toward modern medicine.

The young patient who received sheep’s blood in Paris could never have known that his treatment would become a landmark in medical history. Yet the events of June 15, 1667, demonstrated humanity’s enduring determination to understand the body and to find new ways of preserving life, even through experiments that seemed extraordinary for their time.
