Portugal began its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of the Congo in a closely contested opening match.
The Portuguese side made a dream start, taking the lead just minutes after kickoff. Midfielder João Neves found the net after a well-worked attacking move, putting Roberto Martínez’s team ahead with barely five minutes played.
Portugal appeared in control during the early stages and looked capable of extending their advantage. However, the African side gradually grew into the game and began to pose problems with their pace and physical presence.
Their persistence paid off just before halftime when forward Yoane Wissa capitalized on an opportunity to level the score. The equalizer came at a crucial moment, shifting momentum and ensuring the teams headed into the break on level terms.
After the restart, Portugal increased the pressure in search of a winning goal. The Seleção enjoyed more possession and created several promising attacking situations, while DR Congo remained dangerous on the counterattack.
The Portuguese thought they had restored their lead in the 54th minute when João Cancelo finished a move by putting the ball into the net. Celebrations were short-lived, however, as the goal was ruled out for offside following the assistant referee’s decision.
Despite continued efforts from both sides during the remainder of the match, neither team was able to find a breakthrough. Portugal pushed forward in the closing stages, but the Congolese defense stood firm to secure a valuable point.
The result leaves both teams with one point after the opening round of matches and sets up an intriguing battle for qualification in the group stage.
While Portugal may feel disappointed not to have converted their early advantage into victory, João Neves’ impressive display and the team’s attacking intent offered positive signs for the matches ahead. For DR Congo, the draw represents a strong start against one of the tournament’s traditional contenders and will provide confidence heading into their next fixture.
