The United States booked its place in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a convincing 2–0 victory over Australia in Seattle, continuing an impressive campaign on home soil as one of the tournament’s co-hosts.
The match promised excitement from the opening whistle, and it delivered immediately. Just one minute into the contest, Australia created the first real opportunity when Touré found space inside the penalty area and struck a first-time effort from a tight angle. United States goalkeeper Matt Freese reacted sharply, producing a confident save to deny the early breakthrough.
That moment proved to be one of the few occasions the American defense was seriously tested during the first half. From then on, the hosts largely controlled proceedings, dominating possession and spending extended periods in the Australian half.

The United States consistently looked dangerous down the flanks. On the left, Folarin Balogun, the Monaco forward, used his pace and movement to trouble Australia’s back line. On the opposite wing, PSV Eindhoven’s Sergiño Dest provided width and attacking support, helping stretch the Australian defense.
It was through this approach that the opening goal arrived. Balogun burst forward on the left side and attempted to find striker Ricardo Pepi with a low cross into the box. Under pressure, Australian defender Cameron Burgess inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, handing the Americans a deserved lead.
The goal reflected the balance of play, with the United States creating the majority of the attacking opportunities and maintaining control throughout much of the encounter.
With the victory, the Americans secured their progression to the knockout phase, delighting the home crowd in Seattle and strengthening hopes of a deep run in a tournament they are helping to host. Australia, meanwhile, now faces a more difficult path as they look to keep its World Cup campaign alive.
The result underlines the growing confidence within the United States squad, which has combined defensive solidity with attacking flair during the early stages of the competition. As the tournament moves into its decisive rounds, the hosts will be eager to build on this momentum and continue their pursuit of World Cup success.
