Ecuador produced one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage, coming from behind to defeat Germany 2,1 in a thrilling encounter that showcased resilience, tactical discipline, and clinical finishing.

Germany appeared to be in complete control after taking the lead just two minutes into the match. Florian Wirtz threaded a precise pass into the penalty area where Leroy Sané calmly slotted the ball past Hernán Galíndez, giving the four-time world champions an ideal start.

The advantage lasted only minutes.

Ecuador responded immediately through Nilson Angulo, who unleashed a superb strike from outside the penalty area in the ninth minute after being set up by Pedro Vite. The early equalizer transformed the contest into an open battle, with both teams creating chances throughout an entertaining first half.

Germany controlled long periods of possession and repeatedly tested Ecuador’s organized defense. Kai Havertz forced an excellent save with a powerful header, while Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz continued to threaten around the box. Ecuador, however, remained dangerous on the counterattack, with Enner Valencia and Gonzalo Plata stretching the German back line.

The second half continued at a high tempo.

Julian Nagelsmann introduced fresh attacking options, including Deniz Undav, Malick Thiaw, Maximilian Beier, and Pascal Groß, in an effort to restore Germany’s dominance. Ecuador also reshaped its lineup after injuries, bringing on Kevin Rodríguez and later Pervis Estupiñán to reinforce both attack and defense.

Despite Germany’s pressure, Ecuador gradually grew into the match.

The decisive moment arrived in the 77th minute. Following a corner kick, Kevin Rodríguez won the aerial duel and headed the ball into the danger area, where Gonzalo Plata reacted quickest to fire a left-footed finish into the top corner, completing a remarkable comeback and sending Ecuador’s supporters into celebration.

Germany pushed desperately for an equalizer during seven minutes of added time. Leroy Sané, Deniz Undav, and Pascal Groß all came close, but Ecuador’s defense stood firm under sustained pressure to preserve one of the nation’s most memorable World Cup victories.

The result represents a significant boost for Ecuador’s hopes of advancing to the knockout stage while leaving Germany with work to do in the race for qualification. Ecuador’s disciplined defending, efficient finishing, and determined performance proved enough to overcome one of world football’s traditional powerhouses in a match that will be remembered as one of the tournament’s early classics.
