Mexico secured its place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Ecuador 2,0 in front of an enthusiastic home crowd in Mexico City, continuing the co host nation’s memorable campaign.
The Round of 32 encounter began one hour later than scheduled after severe storms swept across the Mexican capital, but once play finally got underway, the hosts quickly took control.
Julian Quiñones opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, finishing confidently after Mexico created sustained pressure in the Ecuadorian half. The goal lifted the home supporters and gave Javier Aguirre’s side the momentum they needed.
Former Benfica striker Raúl Jiménez doubled Mexico’s advantage just nine minutes later, calmly converting to make it 2,0 before halftime and putting the hosts firmly in command.
Ecuador struggled to recover after conceding twice in the opening half and failed to find a breakthrough against a disciplined Mexican defense that comfortably managed the remainder of the match.
The victory carries added significance for Mexico, which had won only one of its previous ten FIFA World Cup knockout matches, a 2,0 victory over Bulgaria during the 1986 World Cup, also hosted by Mexico.
Now playing with renewed confidence and backed by passionate home support, Mexico advances to the Round of 16, where it will face the winner of the clash between England and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. That match is scheduled for Sunday, once again in Mexico City.
