Championship leader Kimi Antonelli strengthened his grip on the 2026 Formula 1 title race by claiming his first career Sprint victory at the British Grand Prix, overtaking hometown favourite Lewis Hamilton after an intense battle at Silverstone.

Hamilton, driving for Ferrari, had started from Sprint pole position after narrowly edging Antonelli by just 0.011 seconds in Friday’s qualifying. The seven-time world champion made a clean getaway and controlled the opening laps, delighting the home crowd that packed the historic circuit.

However, Antonelli’s Mercedes demonstrated superior race pace. On lap eight, the 19-year-old Italian activated his overtake mode and made a decisive move down the Hangar Straight, sweeping past Hamilton before pulling away in clear air.

Once in front, Antonelli steadily extended his advantage and crossed the finish line around 2.7 seconds ahead of Hamilton, securing the first Sprint victory of his Formula 1 career and becoming the youngest Sprint winner in the history of the championship.

Behind the leading pair, Lando Norris produced another strong recovery drive for McLaren, climbing from sixth on the grid to finish third after successfully defending against Mercedes driver George Russell during the closing laps.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completed the top five, while Max Verstappen finished sixth after losing positions early in the race. Oscar Piastri crossed the line seventh, with Liam Lawson claiming the final Sprint point in eighth place.

For Hamilton, second place still represented an encouraging result after Ferrari’s competitive showing throughout the weekend. Although disappointed not to convert pole position into victory in front of his home supporters, the British driver showed pace capable of challenging Mercedes ahead of Sunday’s Grand Prix.

Antonelli’s victory further extended his championship advantage and continued an impressive run of form during his breakthrough season. The young Italian has quickly established himself as the driver to beat in 2026, combining raw speed with remarkable composure under pressure.

With Mercedes and Ferrari appearing closely matched and McLaren remaining firmly in contention, the stage is set for another highly competitive British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
