Spain booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a dramatic 2,1 victory over Belgium at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, with substitute Mikel Merino scoring a decisive late winner.

The European champions will now face France in a blockbuster semi-final after Les Bleus defeated Morocco 2,0 in the opening quarter-final.

Spain dominated possession for long periods and deservedly took the lead in the 30th minute through Fabián Ruiz. The midfielder finished confidently after excellent build-up play involving Dani Olmo and Pedro Porro, giving Luis de la Fuente’s side an early advantage.

Belgium responded before halftime. Charles De Ketelaere rose highest to meet Timothy Castagne’s cross in the 41st minute, heading beyond Unai Simón to level the score and send the teams into the break at 1,1.

The second half saw Spain continue to control the tempo while Belgium relied on the creativity of Kevin De Bruyne and the pace of Jérémy Doku on the counterattack. Both goalkeepers were called into action as chances came at either end, with Thibaut Courtois producing several important saves before later being forced off through injury.

Spain increased the pressure during the closing stages, introducing fresh attacking options including Pedri, Ferran Torres, Nico Williams and, crucially, Mikel Merino.

The Arsenal midfielder made an immediate impact after entering the match in the 86th minute. Just two minutes later, Pau Cubarsí’s long-range effort was saved by Belgium’s replacement goalkeeper Senne Lammens, but the rebound fell perfectly for Merino, who fired a left-footed finish into the top corner to restore Spain’s lead in the 88th minute.

Belgium pushed forward during seven minutes of added time, introducing Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Saelemaekers in search of an equaliser, but Spain defended resolutely to secure a place among the tournament’s final four.

Lamine Yamal once again impressed throughout the match with his creativity and attacking threat, while Rodri dictated play from midfield and Fabián Ruiz delivered another influential performance, capped by the opening goal.

Spain will now meet France in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the tournament, with both European heavyweights aiming for a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
